Coolibar Athletes Sun Protection Clothing

Technology for a Cooler, More Comfortable Workout

Our newest fabric, Cooltect, now incorporates sweat-activated, cooling technology into every UPF 50+ Coolibar Fitness Shirt! When the body begins to perspire, tiny dots printed inside the fabric work to absorb moisture and activate a cooling agent that actually lowers the temperature of your skin. Check out this review from Coolibar Athlete Chad Hannon, an adventure race competitor and all around healthy living devotee.

I am the kind of athlete that gets hot when I compete or train. In fact, I get so hot that other athletes regularly notice my lack of clothing. No…I’m not “Shirtless Guy” at your local 5k. Although I understand that guy, I still maintain that a shirt should be worn in races. However, I am the guy that is caught wearing just a shirt in races in January and February. No coat. Remember, I live in Illinois.

For instance, last February, I ran an eleven mile race through Starved Rock State Park. The temperature was twelve degrees at the start, and at times when the course took us right by the ice filled Illinois River the wind chill would drop to zero or less. I ran it in an Old-school Coolibar long sleeve fitness shirt. Yes, I did have a hat and light gloves, I’m not totally nuts. You get the idea how warm my body burns though when I compete.

Fast forward to August of this year, and I’m racing the Thunder Rolls 24 hour Adventure Race and it’s 90+ most of the daylight. The humidity taking the heat index past 100 degrees through the hottest part of the afternoon. What am I wearing? Yep, an Old-school Coolibar fitness shirt. I did opt for the short sleeves. The same guy who only wore a shirt in zero is now wearing pretty much the same shirt in 100.

I can honestly remember saying out loud as I ran along “Coolibar needs a cooling shirt! I mean ‘Cool’ is in their name!”. So, I was excited to find out THEY HAVE ONE NOW!

First, from a style standpoint, I was happy so see they stepped up the style. Coolibar shirts always look nice, but they did the stitching in a more contrasting color and it really looks great. I love it.

Second, they kept it just as comfortable. That is to say, it’s one of the most comfortable shirts you will ever own. I have no idea why Coolibar shirts are so comfy, but they are. The fabric is stretching and soft and just feels awesome. I gave my teammate a Coolibar shirt to run a race with me and it’s become a standing joke between us that it’s all she wears now. I am constantly seeing her on Facebook wearing it to a mountain bike race, a long trek, or even to dinner. She swears by its comfort, and so do I.

So, I really can’t tell you how the cooling works. It’s science beyond me. I can just tell you from experience that it does. It is a welcome addition to an already fantastic shirt.

Let’s face it, the ultimate fitness shirt is one you don’t notice you’re wearing. This is it!

Videos What our customers say

Meet Coolibar Customer: Carol

Last summer we invited customers to share a photo of themselves and tell us why they would make a great Coolibar model. You voted (lots of you, thanks!) and our creative team chose the winner. Meet Carol, perhaps our most passionate customer, who submitted not one, but five pictures. It was easy says Carol, because she lives in her Coolibar. Even at the office–paired with a set of fresh water pearls.

“As head of the chamber of commerce, I walk around the downtown area visiting businesses. Throwing on some fresh water pearls with a lovely Coolibar blouse goes from office, (roll down sleeves) to the sunny downtown sidewalks. When you need to be careful of sun exposure, this is an easy, stylish option,” said Carol. Carol was ecstatic to be picked as our winner.  She answered a few questions for us about her experience, her photo shoot and debut as a model.

Why did you apply for the Coolibar model contest? I’ve been very health conscious most of my life, I’m a registered dietitian, and write nutrition and wellness articles.  I advocate healthy eating with lots of fresh foods, and being physically active.  After melanoma surgery and reconstruction, it took a while to get back to my tennis, golf, kayaking etc….and once I was strong and flexible enough to enjoy them again, I found I spent too much time re-applying sun screen and not enough time having fun.  I was always concerned that even though the SPF lotion said “waterproof”….how much water or perspiration would affect the integrity of the protection.  The Coolibar clothing allows me to be outside with family and friends and enjoy water and sweat-inducing land fun.

What was your favorite part of the entire experience? It was fun including my husband in my kayaking photos and my Standard Poodle, Sophie in some of the shots.

How did it feel to be a model for a day? I had a basic idea of what would be happening as my neighbor friend & I organized a “Neighbor Hood Progressive Party” that was filmed for TV.  I knew shots would be repeated in order to get the best light/expression/position/ etc.

Was there any personal goal you had during this process? I am hoping that as I am more pro-active with sharing my enthusiasm for the Coolibar product, more people will take a bit of effort to protect their skin from sun damage.

Is there anything else you wish to share? I presently write a blog called  NutritionFreshOnline, which I want to expand to include fitness and skin health.  I have personal experience with both (I’ve set 2 state swim records in AZ) so I have a wealth of personal anecdotes and insights that could be helpful and appreciated by many.

Look for more from Carol next season!

Tips for Trick-or-Treating

Happy Halloween! For kids, Halloween night is one of the best nights of the year. You get to transform yourself into someone or something else and go door to door asking for candy (and it’s acceptable behavior). When it’s over, you get to count, organize and trade candy with your friends.

Kids and parents alike want a fun and safe evening. These simple tips will ensure a safe and fun Halloween night for everyone.

1. Plan your route ahead of time – Avoid long paths by mapping out a route before leaving the house. Stick to paths that you and your child are familiar with to avoid getting lost.

2. Wear comfy shoes – Blisters beware. Make sure you and your children are in comfortable, well-fitting shoes. You could be covering many blocks by foot.

3. Stay well lit – Apply reflective tape to your child’s costume to ensure they are seen by drivers on the road, carry a flashlight or use the light on your smart phone to guide the way.

4. Avoid masks – Masks make it hard to breath. Use non-toxic makeup or face paint instead.

5. Check your candy – When sorting through candy at the end of the night, be sure to throw away any candy that is not in its original wrapper, or looks as though it has been opened.

Have a safe, fun & Happy Halloween from all of us at Coolibar!

Dedicated to the Health of Children

Our team just returned from the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition, held in sunny Orlando. The weather was ideal, mid seventies and sunny, perfect to introduce our UPF 50+ line of sun wear.

We visited with thousands of pediatricians who stopped by our booth to learn more about Coolibar and sun protective clothing. Coolibar was new to many of you and you asked technical questions on the UV protection level offered by our fabrics. Read more on our testing standards here.

After spending a weekend at the conference, it was clear that pediatricians from across the county are concerned with sun protection, not just those coming from year-round sunny locations. The interest and dedication to the prevention of sun related diseases and ailments is outstanding. Building sun safe habits in childhood leads to a lifetime of healthy skin and our nation’s pediatricians are committed to making this a reality. Thank you docs!

Looking forward to meeting you again next year in San Diego.

Sun Protection at Walt Disney World

Tomorrow, Coolibar will be heading off to sunny Florida to visit the great Pediatricians of America. So we invited guest Denise Preskitt, a seasoned Walt Disney World explorer and blogger at MouseSteps, to let us in on a few of her favorite attractions and why staying sun protected at the parks matters. So grab your mouse ears and get excited!

Keeping my skin safe in the sun has long been important to me, but it wasn’t always. On yearly family trips to Walt Disney World as a child, I didn’t know much about sun protection and ended up with blistering sunburns. In my 30’s, my dermatologist introduced me to sun protective clothing. I spend several days or more per week at Walt Disney World and neighboring parks. It’s very important to me that I wear my Coolibar shirts during daylight hours to prevent additional skin cancers (as I’ve had a pre-melanoma spot removed), and the clothes save me money on sunscreen! Almost everything I own works at night as well.

I started my website, MouseSteps, in 2007 to share my experiences at Florida’s theme parks. Here is a look at one day at Walt Disney World. No two days are the same!

This October, I won a tour of the Fantasyland castles at the Magic Kingdom with an imagineer (a person who devises and implements a new or highly imaginative concept or technology in Walt Disney theme parks). Upon arrival, we, along with other breakfast guests, headed to Cinderella’s Royal Table and The Crystal Palace. Cinderella’s Castle is already decorated in lights for Christmas, which begins at Walt Disney World in early November.

Be Our Guest Restaurant

Jeff, my husband, and I learned a fun details about Fantasyland during the tour – like that the castle walls start showing battle scars on the way to Be Our Guest Restaurant. Be Our Guest Restaurant is the most sought-after restaurant in the Magic Kingdom, both for lunch and dinner. Guests can purchase fun goodies from the movie, such as The Grey Stuff, during dinner.

After breakfast, our group then headed to the Cinderella Castle Suite. A 30,000 mosaic tile of Cinderella’s coach is part of the foyer floor, where Cinderella’s crown and glass slipper are also on display. Stained glass artwork shares the story of Cinderella. Each piece of furniture, and every mirror and decoration look like they were made just for the suite.

After our tour, we spent an hour taking photos inside the Magic Kingdom. The rides we enjoy most often at the Magic Kingdom are The Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Halloween decorations line Main Street, although it will be just a couple of weeks until Christmas shows up! There is a Christmas pumpkin displayed during Halloween that is one of my favorites.

Our day wasn’t quite finished, as we wanted to go to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. The Villas weren’t open yet, but will officially debut on October 23rd (in time for the AAP!). Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is Walt Disney World’s flagship resort, and this is the newest Disney Vacation Club offering.

Boat ride to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort (You can see it in the background)

On a final note, living in Florida, sun protection is extremely important, and I’m so glad I found Coolibar! It travels so well, whether it’s in my gym bag or luggage on vacation, Coolibar is lightweight and dries quickly. I hope you come to Florida soon (with your sun protection of course) and take advantage of all the fun Orlando has to offer.

Inside Coolibar Sun Protection Clothing

Fit to Wear Coolibar

Lupus Foundation of Minnesota Ambassador Chris Cronick spends a lot of time outdoors, teaching spin classes at the gym and traveling around the community to raise awareness for lupus along with her husband Patrick. Coolibar provided them with a few items to test during their busy month. Chris shares their thoughts on fit and function.

Coolibar is an awesome sun protective clothing line for those with lupus (like me) because we need UV protection, yet want fashion and comfort. My husband Patrick and I had the opportunity to try some fantastic items throughout the past couple of months.

I don’t know about you, but when I shop, I’m always curious to know the size and measurements of the model so I can visualize how it may fit on me. I’ve included some pictures so you can see how Coolibar fits on real people. I’m 5’8” and about 130 pounds. I wear extra small and small sizes.

Chris (pictured middle) wearing the Coolibar Vera Resort T-Shirt

One of my favorite Coolibar items is the Vera Resort T-Shirt (size small). I love this shirt so much that I now have it in Fig and Turkish Blue! It didn’t cling around my waist and was longer for my arms, providing great coverage. It’s the softest (almost silky) long sleeved shirt I have ever owned. I’m all about layering, especially living in Minnesota. This shirt can be worn alone or perfectly layered underneath a short-sleeved t-shirt, under a button-down shirt, a light jacket or vest. In fact, I thought it would make a great Christmas gift so I’m getting a couple more for my family!

I sported the Vera Resort T-Shirt, along with the Fitness Jacket in White/Iron at the most recent Twin Cities Lupus Walk for Hope event. There’s reflective piping which makes this the go-to jacket for walking the dog at night (picture upper left). There’s a zippered pocket perfectly situated on the front chest. I found this to be a nice, handy home for my cell phone. I also like the wrist cuffs which double as gloves. How ingenious is that? This lightweight, breathable jacket provides all the sun protection I’ve come to know with Coolibar with the same fitness savvy details you find in more expensive brands.

Chris and Patrick

_ I also wore the black ZnO Long Sleeve T-Shirt for the Lupus Walk for Hope in Duluth, MN. I like this T-shirt because it has a sturdier cotton/spandex construction perfect for a cooler yet sunny day. Again, the ZnO is another great layering staple. I needed to be comfortable for the two-plus hour ride to Duluth, so I wore the ZnO Long Sleeve T-shirt paired with the ZnO Beach Pants. I like to be comfortable when I travel but still feel put-together. As you can see, these beach pants are also great for doing the elliptical at the gym too! You can wear them for virtually anything. They really are an everyday pant, not just for the beach.

Chris wearing ZnO Beach Pants on elliptical

My husband Patrick does not have lupus but has very fair skin and burns easily. I encouraged him to try Coolibar as well, so he wore a few pieces to each walk. To give you an idea of his stature, he is 6’1”, about 220 pounds and mostly wears extra-large. He is tall with broad shoulders and long arms. He finds Coolibar fits his frame perfectly with a little extra “give” where he needs it. He really liked the Men’s Fitness Jacket in Limelight/Iron and the XL fit him great. The sporty colors combined with the functionality and design of the jacket made it perfect for layering up or down. There is a zippered pocket on the sleeve that conveniently held his cell phone and zippered pockets on the front that held our car keys and some money. Lightweight, breathable 3D dri SUNTECT® fabric makes this jacket sun-protective and the surface grid wicks moisture for quick-dry performance. He wears this to the gym all of the time.

I welcome any comments or questions you may have about the items I mentioned. I also want to extend my gratitude to the wonderful people of Coolibar and the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota who opened my eyes to sun protection clothing. I wish you all the very best of health!

Sun Gaiter: One Item for Covering It All

Coolibar Athlete Chad Hannon completes endurance events of all kinds, his favorite being adventure races. Chad wishes to share his thoughts on his favorite adventure racing companion – the Coolibar Sun Gaiter.

In adventure racing, this little item (Sun Gaiter) is known as a buff, or a multi-scarf. It is one of the most versatile and essential items a racer can own. Whether I am running, hiking, biking or kayaking you’ll find this piece of equipment either in my pack, on my head, around my neck, or over my face.

The Coolibar website shows this as a neck gaiter. That simply does not do it justice. It can be worn on your head to protect it from the sun, soak up sweat, cushion a helmet, keep you warm, or any combination of that. It can be worn around your neck to keep the sun off your neck. It can be put over your face when it gets cold to instantly warm you up, and/or keep the dust of a road out of your lungs. I even grabbed two of these and put them on my legs to keep the sun off my thighs as I biked a long stretch in shorts. Additionally, it weighs almost nothing. So little in fact that I shove two in my pack before heading out on any adventure or training.

One of the best ways to keep the cold off when you get chilly is to pull one of these over your face. This little piece of gear can warm you up in a big way. On the other side, one of the best ways to cool down is to get wet cloth on your head or around your neck. Guess what…same piece of equipment. So imagine a race that starts at 49 degrees at night and ends in 90 degree heat…bingo, perfect gear piece.

If you’ve read anything I’ve written before, you know I feel sun protection is cancer protection. Walking around (or doing anything) in the sun unprotected is like smoking a cigarette. It will eventually get you. Something I have not shared in the past is that I recently had to go have a “Spot” on my left temple checked out by my doctor. Scary! It turned out to be nothing, but it makes you think.

Inside Coolibar Sun Protection Clothing

Coolibar Clothing versus Regular Clothing

One of the most common questions our customer service team receives is, “What is the difference between Coolibar clothing and regular clothing?” Here’s our answer:

Regular light-weight clothing provides little protection.
Most light-weight clothing provides less sun protection than SPF 30 sunscreen. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) cites a study conducted in Australia that claims a white cotton T-shirt has a UPF rating of 5, allowing 1/5th of the sun’s UVR to pass through, and even more when wet.

Even if you don’t burn through your clothes, UV passes through.
The SCF states UVA (aging) rays account for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. Even though UVA rays are less intense than UVB (burning) rays, they are 30 to 50 times more prevalent. They are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year, and can penetrate clouds and glass.

UVA rays are longer wavelength than UVB rays, which allows them to pass through windows and clouds.
(Image from the Skin Cancer Foundation)

Coolibar Clothing is UPF 50+, which blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays.
Coolibar SUNTECT® fabrics are engineered and repeatedly tested to provide effective, long-lasting protection from UVA and UVB rays. All Coolibar clothing is rated UPF 50+ from the first to the last day worn. We manufacture several types of fabrics for different activities including swimming, fitness, travel and leisure.

Sun protection is embedded in the fabric.
The sun protection comes from a combination of factors including: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreen ingredients permanently embedded in the fibers and/or a tight weave construction.

Skin coverage matters.
Coolibar clothes are strategically designed to cover up more skin than regular summer clothing, so you need less sunscreen for complete protection.

Technical properties provide additional comfort.
All Coolibar clothes are lightweight, breathable, quick-drying and easy to care for.

SavageMan Competitors Brave the Ultimate Triathlon Course for Melanoma Awareness

The 7th annual “Win-The-Fight” SavageMan Triathlon Festival at the Deep Creek Lake State Park in western Maryland attracted nearly 1100 elite athletes from 30 states and several countries including Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand on September 14, 2013. Athletes competed for more than a medal as the event raised vital funds for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, a voice for melanoma prevention, detection, care and cure.

According to the Foundation’s President, Greg Safko, “The ‘Win-The-Fight’ SavageMan Triathlon Festival has garnered much international attention as arguably the world’s toughest and most savage triathlon at the half Ironman distance.” Besides attracting the world’s most accomplished triathletes to test themselves and compete in the “#1 Hardest Race on Earth!” as rated by Triathlete magazine, the event also informed athletes, spectators and donors that melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer among young adults ages 25 to 29, and if not prevented or detected early, is extremely formidable. “We’re very proud that our signature “Win-The-Fight” fundraising event for the Foundation is supported by a multitude of athletes, team members and sponsors such as Coolibar, to further the JMNMF mission of melanoma education, advocacy and research,” said Safko.

JMNMF President, Greg Safko (right, in blue) cheers on fundraiser and Team Win-The-Fight member, Mark Himelfarb of Lititz, PA, up the Westernport “Wall”.

The SavageMan 70.0 race features a 1.2-mile swim in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, followed by the crown jewel bike stage featuring an over 6,000 foot vertical climb including the most savage ascent in all of triathlon – the Westernport “Wall”. After a 55.6 mile bike-ride, competitors run 13.1 miles on a lakeside trail and end the race with a panoramic lake finish.

Is SavageMan in your future?

U.S. Olympian Susan Williams (pictured) and 6x Ironman World Champion Dave Scott are notable finishers under the SavageMan banner – with D. Scott autographing all 1st place awards for each of seven years of the race’s history to support the JMNMF.
