Goodbye 2013…Hello New Year!

The New Year is upon us. The annual practice of shedding the old and beginning anew unites us together all over the world. It’s a time to take stock of our lives and turn over a new leaf. Many people believe that our actions on this exciting night can influence the year ahead. In addition to fireworks and get-togethers, people around the globe celebrate the New Year with rituals to ensure the days ahead are filled with good fortune and the problems from the past year are put to rest.

In Denmark, people literally leap into the New Year by jumping off chairs to get rid of evil spirits and bring good luck. The Italians throw old things away (traditionally thrown right out the window) to get rid of problems and troubles. The English decorate with spruce trees and mistletoe twigs to symbolize renewal of life after the winter solstice and the Dutch burn their Christmas trees to purge the old and welcome the new.

The ball in Times Square drops on New Year’s Eve.

In Mexico, if a travel-filled year is desired, it is good luck to walk around the block with an empty suitcase (or walk circles around a pile of empty suitcases in the middle of the room). Because round, circular foods are thought to bring good luck, people in Mexico and Spain eat 12 grapes at midnight, bringing good fortune for each of the upcoming months. Americans celebrate by watching the Ball Drop in Times Square (since 1907) and in southern parts of the United States people eat peas to ensure a life of plenty in the upcoming year.

How do you celebrate the New Year? We’d love to hear how you and your family take stock of your lives and turn over a new leaf!

Happy New Year from Coolibar!

Go Ahead…Give and Be Happy

The holidays can be a stressful. It’s easy to forget the true meaning of the season, Giving. Research shows there are many benefits of giving, for both the recipient and the giver. Giving makes you feel happy, can be great for your health and also strengthen the community.

In her article, It’s Good to Give, journalist Diana Rico writes, “Giving doesn’t only strengthen social bonds and make you feel good—it can also measurably impact your health, both physical and mental.” Chemicals in our bodies, like dopamine and serotonin, are boosted by giving. Generosity also helps alleviate stress, which is associated with a number of health problems.

Donating a gift or volunteering your time is a great way to strengthen community. That’s why all of us at Coolibar decided to sponsor a family through Solid Ground for the holiday. Solid Ground is a local organization that prevents and ends homelessness for families with children through housing, resources and opportunity.

Each Coolibar department received a member of the family’s wish list and searched for the perfect, thoughtful gift. Seeing the excitement and gratitude from the family made us remember what the holidays are all about, and it felt really good to help make this family’s holiday a tiny bit more special.

So go ahead and Give this holiday and always. It’s good for all!

Healthy Holiday Eating

The holidays are here. I know this because of the influx of cookies, candy and deluxe gourmet gift baskets from Harry & David that arrive daily at the Coolibar office. Most of the year, I can contain my sweet tooth, but I have a difficult time during the very special holiday season. And the office is just the start, there’s still 2 weeks of cheesy appetizers, creamy eggnog and cranberry cocktails to contend with.

So, I thought it would be helpful for all of us to have a few tips to help maintain our weight over the holiday. I looked to WebMD for holiday survival suggestions and they came through with a great list. I realize it’s long, but there are a lot of really great ideas here.

  • Keep up your regular physical activity and make sure to get in a good workout on the day of the party or event. NO excuses!
  • Be super-diligent on non-party days by sticking closely to your eating plan.
  • Eat a small, nutritious snack before leaving for the party. This helps to take the edge off of your appetite and gives you willpower to resist hors d’oeuvres, saving your calories for the meal.
  • Offer to bring a healthy dish, one you know you can enjoy without lots of extra calories.
  • Ladies, carry a clutch handbag that will keep one hand occupied, reducing the urge to nibble.
  • Ladies and gents, wear a comfortable yet tight outfit that will not allow you to overindulge.
  • Watch your alcohol calories — they add up fast. Alternate alcoholic beverages with non-calorie beverages such as sparkling water.
  • Look over all the food offerings before you decide what you are going to eat. If there are foods that you love but know are decadently rich, just sample a tasting portion.
  • Use a smaller plate (the dessert plate is good). This tip can help you reduce the total amount you eat as long as you don’t go back for seconds.
  • Eat slowly and savor every bite.
  • Don’t linger around the food table! Move to another location that is less tempting.
  • Always sit down while you eat.
  • Portion control and moderation are the keys to success.

Happy holidays from Coolibar and remember to eat responsibly. And if you blow your diet, don’t beat yourself up, just get right back on track, so you can start off the New Year looking and feeling great.

Taking Beauty on the Road

First food, then fashion, now skin care. “Beth’s Beauty Bus” is a mobile skin care boutique with cosmetics, skin care, hair products and personal consultation from esthetician founder Beth Ross, who preaches the importance of sun protection (that’s why she carries our line). We love this concept and wanted to learn more.  Beth graciously agreed to share her story.

Why did you start Beth’s Beauty Bus?
As a practicing Esthetician, I know the best route to great, glowing skin is to have a great home routine with the correct skincare products. By creating the first-ever retail mobile beauty bus, I can see more customers in different parts of LA versus a brick and mortar shop.  Most of all what is truly satisfying is seeing how happy people are with the results.

How long have you been doing it?
Beth’s Beauty Bus got rolling in October 2013.

Beth Ross, founder of Beth’s Beauty Bus

Are there certain groups or areas that request your presence?
My age group ranges from teens to baby boomers because every age has skincare issues.  My physical bus stops:  ALL of Los Angeles.

What are customers most interested in?
Without a doubt, it’s “Anti-Aging”.  And every woman wants to get the “dew” touch look which is why hydration is so critical to the home regime

Are visitors aware of the importance of sun protection? Do they know about sun protective clothing?
Unfortunately, no. People are surprised when I tell them about Coolibar.

Do you have a busy time of year?
It is busy all year long due to our climate and everyone is trying to either get younger or stay younger!

Do you have any quick tips for skin care?
Remember every ripple makes a wave, it is the combination of doing a lot of simple habits that make the recipe for beautiful skin work.  Here are a few basics;

1. Change your pillow case. This is a game changer. Shampoo, hair spray, oil and dirt from our hair travels to the pillow case.  At night, while we change sleeping positions, our face rolls around and marinates with these products and environmental debris.

Here is the pillow case recipe: On Sunday, put a fresh pillow case on. Then Monday, reverse the pillow case out.  Tuesday, do a fresh new pillow case.  Wednesday is the reverse day.  And so on throughout the week.

2. Dedicate one towel for hand washing and another one for the face. I would change both daily if possible.

3. Wash your hands BEFORE you wash your face. The correct amount of time to wash your hands is the length of the song “Happy Birthday to You”. Wash the tops of the hands, inside the fingers, nails and wrist area.  Most people wash the inside portion of the hands.

4. Turn the faucet off with a paper towel. Remember you turned the faucet on with dirty hands.

Anything else you want to share with our readers?

Once a week, apply a mask.  Everyone’s first response is; “I don’t have time”. I suggest applying the mask on Sunday while you do the laundry.  We have a client who now keeps her jar of mask in the laundry room.  She told me, “It’s next to the soap that way I do it”. Smart gal!

If you are in the LA area, look  for Beth’s Beauty Bus. Check out the recent coverage on KTLA.

Promote Skin Cancer Prevention with SPOT

Have you ever been at a party or event where a conversation ignited over something you were wearing? Maybe it was your interesting hat, your scarf (which you bought while touring Italy) or your T-Shirt with a clever message. All these items make for great conversation starters, but if you want to steer the chitchat towards something more meaningful, a UPF 50+ SPOT Skin CancerT-Shirt could be just the thing you’re looking for.

Last spring we partnered with The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) SPOT Skin Cancerinitiative to help raise awareness on skin cancer prevention. Since our UPF 50+ SPOT T’s were revealed at the Academy’s 71st Annual Meeting in Miami, hundreds of you are showing off your SPOT and talking about skin cancer prevention. Here’s what people are saying.

Comfortable UV Awareness
“I hope the Spot is noticeable enough to lead to questions. It might be an excellent shirt to wear to ‘meet the legislators’ events.”

So cool
“I prefer this t-shirt over the other simple white mainly because of the logo. The fabric is as always, comfortable and lightweight and has this ‘cool vibe.’ Paired with skinny dark jeans and flats it’s a match made in heaven.”

We’ve got UPF 50+ SPOT T-Shirts for men and women and Gigi the Giraffe™ for children. Coolibar will donate $10 from every SPOT Skin Cancer™ T-Shirt sale to the initiative.

Talking about skin cancer is the first step in prevention and SPOT can start the conversation. Together, we can all work toward preventing skin cancers.

Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer.

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us…”
– Anonymous

Travel is good for the soul. Immersed in new surroundings you learn, explore and experience the unknown, which broadens your mind and makes you grow as a human. Turns out, travel provides some additional benefits.

The US Travel Association launched a project this year called The Travel Effect, a multi-year, multimillion dollar research and marketing campaign to study and publicize the benefits of travel. “What we’ve long known anecdotally, we will now prove through authoritative research: travel has a positive effect on health, relationships, business performance and the well-being of communities,” said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association.

Below are a few statistics revealed by The Travel Effect.

  • 57% of people who traveled as a children went to COLLEGE.
  • Adults who went on domestic education trips during their youth EARN $5000 MORE OR 12% GREATER INCOME than those who took no trips.
  • 85% of talent managers at “use it or lose it PTO” organizations agree that employees who take time off are “more productive in jobs.”
  • Family vacation memories last a lifetime, 62% of adults remember vacation from a young age.

And if that’s not enough motivation to book a ticket, check out this video from BuzzFeed.
