Winter Sun Protection Mythbusters

Ski tracks in snow

This winter, as you head outside for your favorite winter activities or start planning a sunny vacation getaway, keep these common winter sun protection myths in mind.

Myth #1 – I don’t need sun protection in the winter.

FALSE. The intensity of UV rays varies with the changing seasons and is strongest during the summer months. However, indirect or reflected rays add to the amount of UV exposure received. These rays “bounce” from surfaces such as snow, sand, water, concrete and buildings and can still cause burns—especially during winter activities like skiing.

Myth #2 – I need to tan to ensure healthy amounts of Vitamin D.

FALSE. Tanning is not necessary to achieve vitamin D requirements. Studies show that a few minutes of exposure to the sun, two or three times a week is sufficient. Vitamin D supplements are available and as always, speak to a doctor if you are concerned.

Myth #3 – Getting a “base tan” before heading out on a sunny winter vacation, will minimize the risk of sunburn or sun damage.

FALSE. All tans are damage to the skin. What is called a “base” tan would equal an SPF of about 2, which is so low it is counterproductive. You may prevent burning, but you have increased your chances of getting skin cancer.

Myth #4 – You can’t get sunburn on a cloudy winter day.

FALSE. Cloud cover reduces UV radiation levels, but not completely. Even on a winter day with full cloud cover, exposed skin can burn.

Myth #5 – SPF ratings measure sun protective clothing.

FALSE. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is the correct rating for clothing. UPF is a similar concept to SPF for sunscreens. UPF is the ratio of how much UV radiation passes through a fabric. If a garment isn’t UPF rated, then it isn’t guaranteed sun protection.

Make a healthy habit of using sunblock, sun protective clothing and sunglasses all year long. Be Safe. Be SunAWARE.

Vitamin D and Sunshine (Video)

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis
Uptown Dermatology
Minneapolis, MN

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I just wanted to touch on the topic of Vitamin D and Sunshine.  And while we all agree that we need adequate amounts of Vitamin D the American Academy of Dermatology holds the position that Ultraviolet light is not the safest way to get your Vitamin D

It’s preferred to do that through dietary intake – fish such as salmon or even tuna, even vitamin D supplementation in a vitamin pill is a lot safer for you than getting it through your skin.   In the old days when it was recommended that we get a little natural sunlight, the thing is there weren’t as good of variety of dietary sources and now there are.

So, vitamin D is something you can get adequately through your diet, still use your sunscreen and remain sun safe and SunAWARE!

Shield Your Eyes! 4 Simple Sun Protection Tips

Just like our skin, our eyes are susceptible to damage from the sun. Exposure to intense sunlight for even a short period of time can essentially cause your eyes to develop a “sun burn”. Both short and long term exposure to UV rays could create vision problems and eye damage, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Air and Radiation. In light of this, we’ve compiled some simple tips to keep you and your family’s eyes protected.

1.     Always wear protective eyewear

Clear skies or cloudy days, the sun’s ultra violet rays still reach the earth’s surface. Bright reflected sunlight from sidewalks, sand, snow and other surfaces can cause UV damage just as easily as direct sunlight. Keeping your sunglasses with you for all sunny and semi-sunny occasions will keep you covered!

 2.       Look for quality sunglasses

Look for lenses that blocks 100% of both UVA and UVB rays (label could also say blocks 100% of harmful UV rays or UV 400 protection). Polarized polycarbonate lenses in particular are usually your best bet for full coverage. Keep in mind that price doesn’t always equate to quality. You can find many stylish yet protective sunglasses at reasonable prices.

 3.       Examine your sunglasses

Before you make a commitment to a pair of eyewear, ensure there is no damage to the lenses. Also, double check that the label clearly states 100% UV protection.  Another thing to consider is that bigger frames mean bigger coverage. Look for wide temples so sunlight doesn’t seep in through the sides of the sunglasses. Go for those Hollywood shades!

 4.       Protect future generations

Detrimental forms of UV-related eye diseases typically stem from accumulated damage, which reinforces the importance of starting good eye protection habits at an early age. Educate your kids about the importance of protecting their eyes. When sending them outside, make sure they wear a pair of broad-spectrum UV sunglasses with 100% protection from harmful UV rays. The younger they develop healthy sun protection habits, the less resistance you’ll get as a parent/guardian. For young children, look for a pair of sunglasses that wrap closely around little heads to minimize unfiltered light and have straps to prevent them from falling off.

Keeping Kids Protected from the Sun!

Don’t forget your Sunglasses and a Wide Brimmed Hat!  By following a few simple steps to protect your eyes, not only will you look great in your shades you’ll help avoid eye problems in the future.

Meet our 2010 School Sun Hat Contest Winners

A recent study of elementary school children shows that it is possible to instill effective sun protection behaviors at an early age, helping to limit the cumulative sun damage that causes health problems later in life.  So make sure your children, or grandchildren, take a sun hat along with their school supplies the first day of school.

Last spring Coolibar conducted our second annual School Sun Hat Contest, distributing free sun hats to five winning classrooms across the US.  Meet our 2010 winners below.  If you’d like to help create a top SunAWARE  initiative in your school for the 2010/11 school year, learn how by reading more about our school sun hat program.

School Sun Hat Contest Winners

Coolibar School Sun Hat Contest Winner
Catherine - 1st Grade Teacher - Van Nuys, CA

Catherine teaches at a Title l school, which means that 85% of the population is below the poverty line. The students and their parents were very impressed with the quality of the hats. Catherine learned of Coolibar from her father and has purchased items for her husband who has had issues with skin cancer.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Contest Winner
Madeleine - 1st Grade Student - Fremont, CA

Madeline has a rare medical condition which makes her sensitive to the sun. She has to protect herself from the sun whenever she is outdoors and with the recommendation from her dermatologist, has purchased sun-protective clothing from Coolibar. By winning the contest, all the children in her school were educated about the need for protection from the sun.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Contest Winner
Henry - 2nd Grade Student - Arlington, VA

These students were excited to get the hats and wore them immediately for a lesson in the school garden. Students from other classes asked where the hats came from and Henry was proud to tell them he had won them for all his classmates. Henry’s mother found Coolibar several years ago when she was looking for sun protective clothing.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Winner
Alison - 7th Grade Teacher - Springfield, NJ

After being lectured from her pediatrician about protecting her twin daughters from too much sun, Alison ordered sun hats from Coolibar and received an entry form for the Sun Hat Contest in her box. From her own experience with skin cancer she is very careful about sun exposure and visits her dermatologist every 6 months.  Her students were excited to win the sun hats – and very much needed. One student had missed two days of school after being badly sun burned. He took a hat and promised to never get sun burned again.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Winner
Juan Carlo - 9th Grade Student - Roseville, CA

The students and teachers agree: These are great hats! Due to a medical condition that makes this contest winner sensitive to the sun, his mother had purchased sun-protective clothing from Coolibar and received an entry form with their purchase. The school nurse distributed the sun hats to the kids on the last day of school, just in time for summer vacation.
