Sunscreen Talk: CoTZ and Total Block Explained

Two of our favorite sunscreens at Coolibar, CōTZ and Total Block, provide excellent UVA and UVB protection; however, there are some differences you should know about. We invited Justin Dannecker of Fallene to answer some of the most common questions we get from customers regarding these sunscreens.

Please provide a brief background of the company, your mission, and what you’re working on these days.
Fallene, Ltd. was founded by board certified plastic surgeon and dermatological chemist Dr. Harry Fallick. He had the idea to formulate a product with superior protection for individuals with photosensitive skin. Thus Total Block was created. Continuing along the path of photo-protection innovation came Fallene’s latest sun protective product–CōTZ. CōTZ sunscreen offers maximum protection for individuals that may have sensitive skin and are concerned with chemicals found in many sunscreens. For example, CōTZ Balanced Mineral Complex™ is free of oils, fragrances, preservatives, parabens, PABA, gluten, phthalates, does not irritate or sting and is gentle enough for all skin types.

What is the difference between your CōTZ brand and Total Block brand?
Total Block contains 5 sunscreen filters (2 physical and 3 chemical) for a very protective barrier against UV radiation and even into the visible light spectrum. These products are for someone who needs the ultra high protection.

CōTZ contains only physical sunscreen filters: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These products are for people who have sensitive skin and are concerned with chemical sunscreen filters. Both lines contain the #1 and #2 rated sunscreen ingredients: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Can you explain why your packaging looks different this year? What is new on the label that we should know about?
The packaging changes were mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The two main features on the packaging that changed were that water-resistance of a product must be given a time frame of effectiveness, either 40 or 80 minutes. The second was that all sunscreens must pass a “broad spectrum” test in order to claim broad spectrum protection on their packaging and also be above an SPF 15. These changes were done so that it would be clearer to consumers what they were purchasing and how it would function as a sun protective product.

Do you have any sunscreen that won’t sting or burn sensitive facial skin?
The most popular product that we offer for sensitive facial skin is the CōTZ Face Natural Skin Tone SPF 40. This product is 100% free of: oils, fragrances, chemical sunscreen filters and parabens. It is also very gentle and goes on smooth as to not irritate. Additionally it is non-comedogenic, so it is great for acne prone skin as well since it will not clog pores.

For the active ingredients, you have a sunscreen with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and then one with just zinc oxide. Why is this?
Zinc oxide has been used for centuries as a healing ingredient in many products so it is considered to be very gentle. It also happens to be the #1 UV filter. We have utilized only this ingredient in our pediatric and sensitive skin products to offer the ultimate in gentle protection for those with the most sensitive skin.

Is there a way to reduce the white residue some zinc based sunscreens leave behind?
Our sunscreens are formulated with micronized zinc oxide, which does not leave a white residue on your skin.

Are your products safe to use on babies/toddlers?
The best product to use on children is our CōTZ Pediatric product, which contains no chemical filters, oils, fragrances, parabens or PABA. This is a great product for children above the age of 6 months.

Why is there tint in some of your sunscreen such as CōTZ Plus SPF 58?
We add iron oxide to some of our products for several reasons. It allows the product to match most skin tones by adding a slight tint. It also acts as another sunscreen filter since iron oxide is another mineral just like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Which is better, spray sunscreens or cream sunscreens?
Spray sunscreens all contain chemical filters and are not entirely effective since you might be using it in a windy environment and not get the appropriate amount of the product on your skin to protect you. Since they also all contain chemical sunscreen filters, they are not ideal for individuals with sensitive skin.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your products/brand?
At Fallene we are committed to developing the next generation of sunscreen and skincare products to meet the needs of our customers. Keep your eyes out for new products on the horizon!

If you have any further questions about Total Block and CōTZ sunscreen, send us a message on the Coolibar Facebook Page.

Vera SUNTECT® Review

Can sun protective clothing look and feel luxurious?

I was a big skeptic too, until now.

I work in Yorkville, one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Toronto. For American readers, Yorkville is like the Soho of New York. So looking stylish is important, but so is protecting my skin from the aging effects of the sun—without looking like I live in Boca Raton.

Every week I swing by the swish clinic owned by cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Lisa Kellett, who is our medical advisor on The Skiny.com to see what’s new in the world of skin care.

Preserving youthful, healthy skin is a top priority at Dr. Kellett’s clinic. That’s why she sells not only sunscreen but also chic black sun hats at the front desk. Dr. Kellett has a 360 degree approach to sun protection, “The best way to prevent skin cancer and signs of aging is to use an SPF 30 or higher daily, which covers both UVA and UVB rays. Also a hat, sun protective clothing and using behavioral techniques such as avoiding the sun between the hours of 10 and 4 pm and seeking shade are useful,” advises Dr. Kellett.

Coolibar has made my life easier by offering stylish hats and anti-sun clothing that you’re not embarrassed to wear.  Honestly speaking, most companies using UPF 50+ fabrics are more about function than fashion.

Helen Vong in Coolibar’s Vera Resort T

I became smitten with Coolibar’s quality products last summer when I reviewed their Boyfriend Shirt—which was surprisingly beautifully cut—and wide brimmed hat (so glamorous!). So when Coolibar asked me to review some pieces from their new vera SUNTECT® line, I jumped at the chance.

I chose two tops in orange (Tango), their boldest color, for spring. When the shirts arrived, I did not expect them to feel as nice as some of my designer shirts. I spent the week experimenting with different looks, from work to play.

Somehow, through some magical melding of tightly woven beach wood fibers and spandex, these shirts are soft like cashmere and cut to drape your body beautifully so you can dress them up or down. And how they have managed to retain the high sun protection factor eludes me! My closet—and skin— thanks you, Coolibar for making this truly innovative fabric. Add some anti-aging power to your wardrobe with some vera pieces.

Helen reviewed the Vera Plaza Polo and the Vera Resort T-Shirt. Shop all vera SUNTECT® products.

About Helen: Helen Vong is the Editor-In-Chief at theskinY.com, a Canadian lifestyle site focused on aging beautifully by taking care of your skin. Helen comes from the print world. She spent five years as an editor for Oxygen, a women’s fitness magazine, and as a freelance writer for Elevate, Canada’s anti-aging magazine. Fittingly, her motto in life is “Work hard, play hard – but see a good dermatologist so you don’t age prematurely!”

vera SUNTECT – the fashionable side of sunwear

Have you heard of Coolibar’s latest and greatest fabric?

vera SUNTECT® – A remarkably soothing fabric that feels like cashmere, then combined with a touch of spandex for comfort and shape retention. Tight weave construction blocks 98% UVA and UVB rays (UPF 50+ protection), plus it keeps you cooler than ordinary women’s fashions with a natural look and feel perfect for any occasion.

Sounds great – right? Being released only two weeks ago, we’ve already had a great response from the first customers to buy.  Michael Hubsmith, Coolibar’s Executive V.P. of Merchandising, has been creating new technical Coolibar UPF 50+ fabrics for years, so we decided to ask more about his and the merchandising team’s new creation.

What does vera bring to the Coolibar SUNTECT® line of fabrics? – We viewed this fabric as a luxury sun protective fabric: soft, silky and cool to the touch– sort of a cashmere like quality version of SUNTECT® compared to ZnO SUNTECT®, which is like a merino wool quality in common sportswear terminology. We see it as primarily a women’s casual sportswear fabric.

Vera Shores Tunic

What is it made of? Or why is it so great, soft and cool!? The fibers are a micro cellulose (poplar trees) base. It is considered bio-based rather than natural because, though the raw materials used to make it are natural, they are processed in order to be made into fibers.

What type of garments are we making with it now and in the future? Vera SUNTECT® is a knit fabric and generally knits are softer, more drapeable, and more breathable than woven fabrics . We have maximized these attributes with the Vera fiber because it is also lightweight and has a “cool to the touch” feeling. We will use this fabric in women’s styles.

What are the benefits of wearing vera SUNTECT® over ordinary women’s fashions? We have not sacrificed fashion for sun protective function in vera SUNTECT®.

Choose the Right Print for You

Coolibar has new prints and colors galore this spring. Choosing a print that complements your facial features can be a daunting task. Our favorite go to stylist, Bridgette Raes, knows all about choosing the right print for your complexion, so we decided to take some advice from her blog.

Bridgette’s Advice:

“When choosing prints, one must consider their own personal coloring to decide just how much bold contrast to wear.

Print Intensity – Combining two colors together in a print creates a contrast between those two colors. For example, if those two colors are extreme opposites (like black and white) you have created a high amount contrast, which gives the print a high level of intensity. If, however, the color combinations found in the print are closer in relationship to each other (a combination of soft pastels, for example) you have created a low amount of contrast between the colors and that combination has a low level of intensity.

Coolibar UPF 50+ clothing: Long Sleeve Swim Shirt, Sun Tunic, Paddle Swim Shirt, ZnO Cabana Hoodie

Just like color combinations in prints have an intensity level, so does your own personal coloring. Intensity levels vary from person to person, and can be high, low, or somewhere in between, which would be referred to as medium. Your own level is determined by the relationship of contrast between your hair, skin and eyes. The model on the right has a lot of contrast between her hair skin and eyes which creates a lot of contrast or an intensity in her coloring. The model on the left has much softer features, with her hair, skin and eyes being closer in color; therefore her intensity level, would be low.

Why does this matter?

When choosing prints, it is important to consider your own personal intensity level as you’ll always look best when your personal intensity matches the intensity in the prints you choose.

When someone with a low level of intensity in their personal coloring wears too much contrast in the color combinations they choose they look drowned out. When a person with a high level of intensity in their coloring chooses a color combination that is too soft or low in contrast, they look washed out.”

Keep these guidelines in mind if you’re unsure of a print choice, but at the end of the day, if you love a print, go for it!

Avoid UV & Seek Shade Inside Coolibar New Products Parenting

Is your shade structure shading your kids enough?

As a mom of two active boys I have attended hundreds of sporting events.  For shade and sun protection I bring our portable beach umbrella or canopy.  Over the years, I have noticed that portable umbrellas and canopies only provide minimal sun protection.  Most portable umbrellas and canopies do not block UVA or UVB rays, they provide only a limited shade area (the largest of which is when the sun is directly overhead) and they do not block the UV rays that are reflected off of the ground.

When I researched reflected UV rays, I was shocked to learn that up to 1/3 of cancer causing UV rays can reach your skin while you are sitting in the shade.  One such study in New Zealand concluded that shade structures with side on walls provided the best protection from UV rays.  My frustration with portable shade structures and their inability to provide adequate shade and sun protection lead me to start my company, Solar Eclipz, and to develop the ezShade.

The patented ezShade is the only portable sun-shield that blocks over 99% UVA/UVB rays and instantly attaches to any nylon/poly umbrella or canopy.  Our company’s focus is to educate the public on the harm caused by reflected UV rays and the need for staying sun-safe and I hope that this post too will help you enjoy a sun-safe summer.

With the temperature soaring and the sun shining brighter, chances are you want to keep your little one safe from the sun. While you’d love to keep them indoors all day, you know you really can’t do that. However, what you CAN do is keep them sun safe by choosing products that provide and boost UV protection, easily and effectively.

Here are 5 must-have sun safety products for parents of preschoolers:

1. Sun Hat

Yes, every toddler needs a good sun hat. Luckily for you, Coolibar offers you some great options. Choose a sun hat that shades most of the face and keeps the sun’s rays away from sensitive skin. Also, don’t just get one sun hat. Get a couple. Preschoolers are always losing stuff or getting them dirty.

2. Sunglasses

Sunglasses are not only for adults. You need to keep your preschooler’s eyes safe from the sun’s rays as well. However, don’t just go out and buy any pair of sunglasses. Look around for a brand that’s trusted and certified. Also, take the little one when you go shopping so that you can try on the pair for fit and comfort.

3. UV Protective Clothes

Sun protective clothes can be a life-saver, especially when you’re at the park or the beach. While you can get special sun protective clothes, you should also make sure that regular clothes offer adequate sun protection. Long sleeves, light colors, cotton fiber are some things to look for when choosing outdoor summer wear for the kids.

4. Sunscreen

Never, ever send your toddler out to play without slathering on the sunscreen. Choose a brand that is kid-friendly and child-appropriate. Blue Lizard and UV Natural both have SPF 30+ sunscreens available for kids. Make sure you apply the sunscreen at least 15 to 20 minutes before they go out to play and reapply it, if they go swimming or wash their faces. Also, don’t forget the BEENS or Back of knees, Ears, Eye area, Neck, and Scalp to ensure full coverage.

5. Shade

And finally, make sure that when they play outside or spend time on the beach, they have adequate shade and sun protection. Using a portable shade such as the ezShade will not only increase the protection that an umbrella offers, it will also keep kids sun-safe without blocking out their fun.

Keeping preschoolers safe in the sun does not need a LOT of effort. Just a few must-have products can help summer be fun and safe for your on-the-go, active toddler. So, go ahead and get equipped for the most enjoyable, sun-safe season ever!

About the Author: Linda Varga is the founder of Solar Eclipz and inventor of the ezShade,  www.myezshade.com, an award-winning sun shield that instantly attaches to any umbrella/canopy, blocks over 99% UVA/UVB rays, doubles your shade, and keeps you cooler all day long.

Jennifer wearing Wide Leg Pant - Beach Style

“I love my Coolibar Wide Leg Pants! I was in New York last April and searched the city over for a pair of brightly colored wide leg pants just like this, with no luck. I found a few but they didn’t fit right, the color was wrong or they were way too expensive. Lucky for me, I found them right here at Coolibar. I love these pants because the fold top waistband is flattering, they are amazingly comfortable, they’re silky-smooth and are extremely light weight. They have easily become my go to pants that I put on after work or for a Saturday afternoon in the city.” – Jennifer

Heather wearing Wide Leg Pant - Beach Style

“I love the new Coolibar wide leg pant, because it can be dressed up or down. Yesterday I wore them lounging in the humid MN weather and the pants kept me cool. The fabric is amazing and very soft! Pictured is my beach look. When I go to the beach I like to be covered up with layers that can be taken off when I go swimming. Thanks to these pants, I don’t have to apply sunscreen every time I get out of the water.” – Heather

Julie wearing Wide Leg Pant - City Style

“The wide leg pants are so comfortable! I love the lightweight silky material and the yoga inspired fold waist. I pair my pants with a lightweight tank top for a day time look, and throw over a jacket for going out at night. This is my go-to pant for the summer!” – Julie

Hot Hats of the Season

Summer is nearing, and if you’re in the market for a new show-stopping wide brim hat we want to let you know what to look for this season. Coolibar trend seeker and buyer Amy Jo Henriksen has spent several months looking for hats that not only look great, but provide sun protection to keep your skin looking flawless!

Amy Jo, where do you look when deciding what hats to buy for upcoming seasons?

We review the current trend forecast for colors and shapes and travel to trade shows to see what is new and exciting for the coming year. We also watch what is out in the current market by spending time at other retailers.

What do you see being trendy this summer in hats?

We are seeing animal print accents. Wide brims continue to be popular and a nautical feeling has come to the foreground in color blocking and stripes.

Do you think we’ll see a lot bigger brims out this summer?

I believe there will be a great mix of brim sizes this summer. For those who want great sun protective coverage the wide brim hat is the best accessory in the market. For those who are active the 3”+ brim width allow for more function and versatility.

What would you recommend wearing to a summer wedding?

I love our Monaco Wide Brim Hat in toast or the Oceanside Sun Hat in black with white banding. Both are outstanding and would make a great accessory for day of dress-up.

What would you recommend sporting at the beach?

Our Chlorine Resistant Bucket Hat is a customer favorite. It’s easy to pack, easy to adjust and you can wear it in or out of the water without worrying about it fading or getting crushed. It’s a go to piece that coordinates great with our sun protective swimwear.

What Coolibar hat style are you most excited about?

Our Fedora Sun Hat for ladies is a great style that is on trend but offers a 3” brim which is difficult to find on most Fedora hats in the market today. Traditionally, the fedora has a small brim width which does not offer the optimal sun protection. We are excited to have an updated modern shape which can offer the level of protection our customers expect from Coolibar.

What is your favorite Coolibar hat of all time and why?

I love the Shapeable Travel Sun Hat. It’s constructed of ribbon which allows it to be packed flat or rolled for travel but always returns to its original shape without looking damaged.  It’s lightweight and offers great coverage with its 3¾” brim. I think the size and shape look great on everyone and love the wonderful colors its available in.

Coolibar in the Big Apple

Last week spring was in the air.  With temperatures in the 70’s in New York City, it felt more like June than March.  The cherry blossoms were in bloom and New Yorkers were out in masses soaking up the summer sun– grabbing their shades and leaving their jackets behind.

This was perfect weather to introduce Coolibar’s spring and summer line to fashion, health and beauty editors across the city.  Carol Schuler (of Schuler Publicity) and I hit the Manhattan streets and hauled our oversized bag of Coolibar goodies to the “big books” at Hearst, Meredith and Conde Nast, in addition to meeting with some of our favorite bloggers.

The new line and fabrics were met with great enthusiasm.  In fact, a new hat was called in immediately for consideration.  We heard ooh’s and ah’s as editors felt the silk like texture of our aire SUNTECT® fabric and tried on fabulous hats with an 8” brim.  “The big brims are glamorous and keep your shoulders protected too,” exclaimed on editor (she got to keep that hat).  Look for Coolibar products in your favorite magazines this summer.

What does this all means for you, our dear customer?  It means you are in for a real treat!  Our new catalog hits homes next week and is bigger and better than ever with over 32 new styles to keep you cool and protected this summer.  We’ve introduced new fabrics and fitness gear alongside our customer favorites.

So get out there and enjoy life in the sun, Coolibar will keep you safe!
