Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Coolibar Beach Umbrella

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month?

May has been declared Skin Cancer Awareness Month by the Centers for Disease Control.  With more than 3.5 million skin cancers diagnosed annually in over two million people in the United States, we need to become SunAWARE.

Here are a few ideas for you to be AWARE of Skin Cancer this month and all summer long.

1.) Start out May with a Free Skin Cancer Screening.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday- 5/2/2011.  The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of melanoma, a potentially fatal skin cancer, and to encourage early detection.  With early detection, melanoma has a high cure rate.  Participating clinics offer free screenings on that day and throughout the month.  Click the links below for more information.

2.) Walk or Run to support Skin Cancer Research.

There are many walks/runs across the United States that raise money in support of skin cancer research, such as the Stay Out of the Sun Run in Rochester, MN.  Search locally for an event in your area, or create your own Miles for Melanoma event.

3.) Register to win Free School Sun Hats from Coolibar in May.

In May Coolibar is giving away free school sun hats to 5 winning classrooms across the United States.  Download the contest form to enter.  Contest deadline is May 13th.

4.) Kick off your summer with Don’t Fry Day.

The Friday before Memorial Day (5/27/2011) is deemed “Don’t Fry Day” by The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention.   The purpose is to remind everyone to protect your skin while enjoying the outdoors.

Pledge to follow these simple steps to prevent and detect skin cancers all summer.

School Sun Hat Program (Video)

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis
Uptown Dermatology
Minneapolis, MN

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I want to talk to you today about an issue that is near and dear to my heart, and that is Coolibar’s School Sun Hat Program.  My daughter’s pre-school qualified for this program and they were outfitted with a bunch of adorable little pre-school sized hats so that when they go outside to play at recess they have their sun protection covered.  A lot of schools consider sunscreen creams as medication and they don’t necessarily have the freedom to apply sunscreen to your child.  So, having a school that provides hats to your child will ensure their sun protection when they’re outside.

There are some super cute options.

Child Reversible Bucket Hat

This little reversible lightweight sun hat, that is also adjustable, keeps them cool, keeps them protected.  I’d still have them wear their sun protective clothing for their little arms but this will provide adequate protection for their ears and face and actually does help keep them cool when they are running around at recess.

Child Chin Strap Hat

Another example in a little bit of a different fabric is also adjustable.  This one has a nice little chin strap too, so maybe if you’re out on the boat with the kids for example.  It also has a nice little absorbent headband.

So teaching kids to be SunAWARE at a young age is the point of this School Sun Hat Program that Coolibar puts on.  I highly recommend it, make sure your child’s school applies for the program.

Help teach your kid to be SunAWARE at a young age, the value lasts a lifetime!

Coolibar’s School Sun Hat Contest

For the third consecutive year, Coolibar is sponsoring a School Sun Hat Contest.  Five winners will be selected at random to receive hats for their classroom.  The contest promotes the SunAWARE acronym to teach simple steps to prevent and detect skin cancers.

Preventative sun safety habits begin in childhood and the classroom is a great place to reinforce those behaviors.  Our contest makes School Sun Hats available to classrooms that may not have the resources.

Sun Protective Creativity

Back to School with Style

This Pebble Beach, California elementary school wanted to incorporate sun hats to their school uniform.  They ordered 250 of the Coolibar Reversible Bucket Hat in the color stone/navy, which perfectly matches their navy school uniforms.

The hats were issued to the entire student body at the start of the school year, with the rule that all students must wear their sun hat while outdoors to protect against the California sun.

In order to individualize their hats, the teachers and students brought out the magic markers and unleashed their creative energy.  Shown are just a few of the many original sun hats that were created.  The students had an excellent time personalizing their hats and it’s easy to tell whose hat is whose, plus they actually enjoy wearing their new sun hats.

We love this creative approach to promoting sun safety and making sun hats a part of everyday life!

Meet our 2010 School Sun Hat Contest Winners

A recent study of elementary school children shows that it is possible to instill effective sun protection behaviors at an early age, helping to limit the cumulative sun damage that causes health problems later in life.  So make sure your children, or grandchildren, take a sun hat along with their school supplies the first day of school.

Last spring Coolibar conducted our second annual School Sun Hat Contest, distributing free sun hats to five winning classrooms across the US.  Meet our 2010 winners below.  If you’d like to help create a top SunAWARE  initiative in your school for the 2010/11 school year, learn how by reading more about our school sun hat program.

Catherine learned of Coolibar from her father and has purchased items for her husband who has had issues with skin cancer.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Contest Winner
Madeleine - 1st Grade Student - Fremont, CA

Madeline has a rare medical condition which makes her sensitive to the sun. She has to protect herself from the sun whenever she is outdoors and with the recommendation from her dermatologist, has purchased sun-protective clothing from Coolibar. By winning the contest, all the children in her school were educated about the need for protection from the sun.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Contest Winner
Henry - 2nd Grade Student - Arlington, VA

These students were excited to get the hats and wore them immediately for a lesson in the school garden. Students from other classes asked where the hats came from and Henry was proud to tell them he had won them for all his classmates. Henry’s mother found Coolibar several years ago when she was looking for sun protective clothing.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Winner
Alison - 7th Grade Teacher - Springfield, NJ

After being lectured from her pediatrician about protecting her twin daughters from too much sun, Alison ordered sun hats from Coolibar and received an entry form for the Sun Hat Contest in her box. From her own experience with skin cancer she is very careful about sun exposure and visits her dermatologist every 6 months.  Her students were excited to win the sun hats – and very much needed. One student had missed two days of school after being badly sun burned. He took a hat and promised to never get sun burned again.

Coolibar School Sun Hat Winner
Juan Carlo - 9th Grade Student - Roseville, CA

The students and teachers agree: These are great hats! Due to a medical condition that makes this contest winner sensitive to the sun, his mother had purchased sun-protective clothing from Coolibar and received an entry form with their purchase. The school nurse distributed the sun hats to the kids on the last day of school, just in time for summer vacation.
