The Villages Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team

The Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team

Ah, Retirement – time to sit back, relax, and reflect on life. Not anymore and certainly not for the Leathernecks Dragon Boat Racing Team of The Villages, a retirement community in Florida! This racing team is a National Champion – taking home the “Gold Medal” in the 200 meter race and a “Silver Medal” in the 500 and 2,000 meter races in the 2010 USDBF Club Crew National Championships.

The 24 member Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team is comprised of former and retired U.S. Marines and their wives or significant others, whose average age is 66. The slang term “Leatherneck” is used to describe United States Marine Corps members and originated from the leather collar formerly part of the uniform, worn for protection of the neck during sword combat. A fitting name for our retirees!

Watch Team Leatherneck footage from the 2010 USDBF National Championships.

Though these Leathernecks are no longer protecting their necks from swords, they are protecting themselves from UV. Many of the team’s members are battling skin cancer in one form or another and spend countless hours training and racing in the sun. The Coolibar Short Sleeve Swim Shirt provides UPF 50+ protection for Team Leatherneck, to which their dermatologists are celebrating. You can’t keep these guys off the water!

The Villages Leathernecks practice two days a week on Lake Dora and spend another two days lifting weights and physically training. Their fierce competitive spirit has earned them the respect and admiration of the many much younger teams in the Florida Dragon Boat Circuit. The Leathernecks serve as a reminder that life doesn’t end at retirement, in fact for many, it’s just begun.

The 2011 World Championships will be held in Tampa, Florida this August. Here’s to another Gold Medal for The Villages Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team!

Sun Protective Clothing (Video)

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis
Uptown Dermatology
Minneapolis, MN

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I wanted to talk to you today specifically about sun protective clothing and why we need it.  While we love our sunscreen and advise putting sunscreen on the face, V of the neck, back of the hands, the best sun protection actually comes from sun protective clothing

The fact is, it’s hard to use enough sunscreen and remember to re-apply it.  But if you put on a nice piece of sun protective clothing, you have the relief of not having to remember to do those things – especially for the kids who are going to be out and about and playing.  Simply putting a t-shirt on them and letting them run around in the water is not enough sun protection.  That t-shirt loses its sun protective factor the minute it gets wet. It goes down from maybe a 5-7 to about a 2 and that’s not enough sun protection for a kid.

I’m going to show you some interesting alternatives.

Coolibar makes a fantastic material that is UPF 50, nice light woven material, tightly woven so the sun does not get through it.  It’s like  a fine silk really and it’s a synthetic fabric that washes up beautifully, I know, but it feels super lightweight and is  very breathable and is constructed so that there is airflow through the back.  So, you don’t overheat in these, even though you’re wearing long sleeves there is beautiful ventilation.  And actually, keeping the Ultra violet light off your skin keeps you cooler.  Ironically wearing a sun protective shirt will keep you cooler.

Some nice clothing for kids this fabric has Zinc Oxide, a physical sunscreen that we reviewed in another segment, embedded in here.  This keeps you nice and sun protected and even if it gets wet it does not lose its sun protective factor.  And some super cute stuff for kids, this long sleeve, you just don’t have to worry about getting the kids sunburned.  Keep the hat on everybody, a nice pair of sunglasses and you’ve got it covered.

Stay SunAWARE, Wear Sun Protective Clothing and Be Safe!

Follow up on the Grand Canyon Peeke Performers – Reflecting on the Expedition

This past September eight adventurous women took on the challenge of hiking the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim as part of their journey of personal fitness and wellbeing.  The two-day 26.2 mile hike involved over 5,800 feet of descent and 4,500 feet of elevation gain, while each person carried 25 pound backpacks along the way.

Many factors attributed to the overall success of the difficult hike, one being the excellent guidance of hike leader Dr. Pamela Peeke, a renowned nutrition, fitness and health expert. Dr. Peeke says, “This is when all of those hours you spent in the gym, or were physically active, really paid off. You need strong legs, great balance and flexibility, as well as mental and physical stamina and endurance, to survive this advanced hiking trek. Mind and body unite to allow you to thoroughly embrace and enjoy every single moment of the journey.”

Dermatologist Dr. Shanny Baughman also attributes her success to physically and mentally preparing. “I leapt at the chance to join Dr. Peeke and her “Peeke Performers” on this hike,” says Dr. Baughman. “After opening my derm office in October, 2008, my energy was all going into the practice.  I was becoming the person I never wanted to be – middle-aged and out of shape.  Well, I can only change one of those, and Pam has helped me do that. She has been counseling me to incorporate exercise into my daily routine.”

Dermatologist Dr. Baughman also brought her expertise in skin health to the group. “I had two concerns about the trip – 1) would I be able to make it and 2) how to stay protected from the sun for two days straight?” says Dr. Baughman. While Dr. Peeke helped Dr. Baughman ease her first concern, Coolibar assisted in eliminating her concern about sun protection. The Grand Canyon provides very little shade and the sun’s rays can become extremely intense. Wearing the provided Coolibar shirts and hats allowed the trekkers to focus on their journey and pay less attention to sunburns and heat exhaustion. “Spray-on sunscreen with zinc oxide, and sun protective hats and shirts from Coolibar kept our skin hidden from the intense UV rays,” says Dr. Baughman.  “The garments and hats were effective yet light weight.  I couldn’t imagine the trip without them.  They fit well, yet were loose enough for hiking, climbing up switch backs, and over streams.”

All of the Peeke Perfomers mentally and physically prepared for this challenging task by exercising, eating well and finding a reliable source of sun coverage. With this in mind, Dr. Peeke sends us these encouraging words. “By the end of the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike, every participant realized that if they could get through this mental and physical feat, they could probably get through anything in life. That’s the beauty of these challenges. You could do the same thing. Choose a challenge, any challenge (e.g. walk or jog a 5K, walk 4 miles and live to talk about it!), and see how that achievement gifts you with the confidence to face life’s curve balls.”

Prepare for your next challenge, and stay sun safe.

Corrine in Her Beach Shirt

A Coolibar customer letter.

8/31/2010

Dear Coolibar:

As a very satisfied first time customer of Coolibar clothing, I wanted to show you that it was a pleasure wearing my [Savannah Wide Brim] hat and outfit [with the Beach Shirt] on a very hot day and still feeling cool!

The material is wonderful even in long sleeves!  So easy to launder and quick drying too.

The hat is great and the ties keep it from blowing away, which I did not know they were for that purpose. My niece showed how to use them!

I advise people interested to request your catalog at coolibar.com as they have clothing for men too.  What a great product!

I talk about my Coolibar outfit often.  It is even casual enough to wear at luncheons with my friends and out shopping.  I cannot praise the product enough and I thank my niece all the time for sending me such a wonderful birthday gift!

She just ordered me one in yellow for this year’s birthday, can’t wait to get it!

I can now enjoy boat rides better without a beach towel and baseball hat to cover me from the sun and wind.  They are so quick drying!!

UPF 50+ Convertible Polos

Over the past months, Coolibar’s merchandising team has been hard at work designing new sun protection apparel, always keeping practicality, purpose and fashion in mind. One of the more exciting parts of creating new products is putting them up to the test!

Recently, we came across the perfect opportunity to obtain some solid feedback on our new Convertible Polo.  Dr. Manju George, a board certified pediatric dermatologist who provides personalized care for children and young adults at her private office in Florida, was excited to be one of the first to try this new sun protection polo and give us her input.

What our customers say

Geared Up for Coffee Farming

A few weeks ago we received a message on the Coolibar Facebook page from an enthused Coolibar customer. “I’ve done my share of shopping for your wonderful clothing this year. I wear your long sleeve blouses almost every day. I have a coffee farm in Kona, Hawaii.” This comment from Marian sparked our interested as it’s not everyday you meet a Hawaiian coffee farmer who shares the same passion for sun protection as we do! We decided to contact her and find out more about her Kona coffee farm, Hualalai Mauka, and how sun protection plays a role in her life as a farmer.

Our farm is 4 acres in the northern end of the Kona district on the Big Island of Hawaii. We live in a little farming and artsy village of Holualoa. We only sell 100% pure Kona coffee. We have customers all over the world including Latvia, England, Australia, Poland, Sweden, France and Finland.

In addition to coffee, we grow pineapples, bananas, papayas, avocados, citrus, sugar cane, macadamia nuts and some other tropical fruit. All of our crops are labor intensive. My husband and I do most of the work ourselves. Neither my husband nor [I] had any prior experience in farming.

We live at 2000 foot elevation. We typically have sunny mornings and cloudy afternoons in this area. Most of the time there is rain for a while in the afternoon. The temperature is in the mid-70s.

We go into Kona for coffee and a walk in the morning. Kona is the hottest area in the state of Hawaii. It is mostly sunny all of the time. I wear long sleeves and pants when I go into town.

I am in and out of the house all day. Whenever I think that I will have a nice shady afternoon in the office, I find myself working outside. I need to be covered up in anticipation of all of the last minute calls to attention for out crops or to show visitors around the property.  Even though it is cloudy in the afternoon, I try to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants.

I was diagnosed with a mild case of Lupus several years ago. I burn easily. I have an ongoing battle with sun problems on my face and arms.

I use Coolibar items almost every day. I mostly wear the shirts. I also use the zip up swimming shirt and long swim pants whenever I go in the water. I wear the long sleeve pull over t-shirts. I [particularly] like the bamboo one (ZnO Long-sleeve T-Shirt). I also like the styling of the Coolibar clothes and the fabric because it looks neat still after washing. The shirts are also nice and cool.

People I see think I am a bit strange for wearing long sleeve shirts when it is 90o in downtown Kona or at the beach especially when they are wearing very few clothes. I do a lot of talking about how good the Coolibar clothes are and the need for sun protection.
