Fishing in the Amazon

Jack Ip, also known as JIP, is the Senior Editor of Tackle and Tour, an online source of tackle news and reviews, and he makes it his business to seek some of the best fishing in the world. Last November, he traveled outside his hometown near the shores of Lake Sonoma in California, to the Amazon to fish for one of the world’s toughest freshwater species — Peacock bass. While carefully thought-out bait was essential to the success of the trip, tackle wasn’t the only thing he brought with him to the treacherous waters of Barcelos, Brazil.

“This was my first trip to the Amazon and my first time catching Peacock bass. As much as the tackle is important on a trip like this, keeping yourself in tip-top shape and providing yourself protection is just as critical … Wearing protective gear to keep the sun exposure to a bare minimum is important if you’re fishing 6 days straight for 10+ hours per day.

“Coolibar has been producing sun protective clothing since 2001 and today all their apparel are rated UPF 50+, the highest rating you can have in clothes. So the Coolibar Sunblock Fishing Shirt was a must have for my trip to the Amazon. There was no way the harmful UV rays, even the harsh ones in Brazil, would penetrate the Sunblock fishing shirt. I received no sunburns or evening a darkening of my skin during the entire trip in South America.

“Due to venting it provided coolness while fishing all day. The Sunblock shirt, when wet, also dries quickly especially if you’re running the boat. The fishing shirt has many features designed just for anglers such as a collar that you can unfold to provide neck protection or the Velcro pole tip holder just to name a few. Overall a good fishing shirt that’s UPF 50+ rated and useful features that any angler would welcome.

“Fly thousands of miles away, you won’t want to leave home with just mediocre tackle as this is mostly a once in a life time trip for many anglers … And apparel, it must provide good protection or you’ll come back lobster red and hurting. UPF rated, 40+ or 50+ is recommended. Plus a hat to cover up is almost a must have.”

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I wanted to talk to you today specifically about sun protective clothing and why we need it.  While we love our sunscreen and advise putting sunscreen on the face, V of the neck, back of the hands, the best sun protection actually comes from sun protective clothing

The fact is, it’s hard to use enough sunscreen and remember to re-apply it.  But if you put on a nice piece of sun protective clothing, you have the relief of not having to remember to do those things – especially for the kids who are going to be out and about and playing.  Simply putting a t-shirt on them and letting them run around in the water is not enough sun protection.  That t-shirt loses its sun protective factor the minute it gets wet. It goes down from maybe a 5-7 to about a 2 and that’s not enough sun protection for a kid.

I’m going to show you some interesting alternatives.

Coolibar makes a fantastic material that is UPF 50, nice light woven material, tightly woven so the sun does not get through it.  It’s like  a fine silk really and it’s a synthetic fabric that washes up beautifully, I know, but it feels super lightweight and is  very breathable and is constructed so that there is airflow through the back.  So, you don’t overheat in these, even though you’re wearing long sleeves there is beautiful ventilation.  And actually, keeping the Ultra violet light off your skin keeps you cooler.  Ironically wearing a sun protective shirt will keep you cooler.

Some nice clothing for kids this fabric has Zinc Oxide, a physical sunscreen that we reviewed in another segment, embedded in here.  This keeps you nice and sun protected and even if it gets wet it does not lose its sun protective factor.  And some super cute stuff for kids, this long sleeve, you just don’t have to worry about getting the kids sunburned.  Keep the hat on everybody, a nice pair of sunglasses and you’ve got it covered.

Stay SunAWARE, Wear Sun Protective Clothing and Be Safe!

Inside Coolibar Sun Protection Clothing What our customers say

Corrine in Her Beach Shirt

A Coolibar customer letter.

8/31/2010

Dear Coolibar:

As a very satisfied first time customer of Coolibar clothing, I wanted to show you that it was a pleasure wearing my [Savannah Wide Brim] hat and outfit [with the Beach Shirt] on a very hot day and still feeling cool!

The material is wonderful even in long sleeves!  So easy to launder and quick drying too.

The hat is great and the ties keep it from blowing away, which I did not know they were for that purpose. My niece showed how to use them!

I advise people interested to request your catalog at coolibar.com as they have clothing for men too.  What a great product!

I talk about my Coolibar outfit often.  It is even casual enough to wear at luncheons with my friends and out shopping.  I cannot praise the product enough and I thank my niece all the time for sending me such a wonderful birthday gift!

She just ordered me one in yellow for this year’s birthday, can’t wait to get it!

I can now enjoy boat rides better without a beach towel and baseball hat to cover me from the sun and wind.  They are so quick drying!!

NEW Coolibar Convertible Polo Review – We’ve got more up our “sleeve”

UPF 50+ Convertible Polos

Over the past months, Coolibar’s merchandising team has been hard at work designing new sun protection apparel, always keeping practicality, purpose and fashion in mind. One of the more exciting parts of creating new products is putting them up to the test!

One of our new developments, the Coolibar Convertible Polo, is an innovative short sleeve golf polo containing separate matching sun sleeves that fit snugly to protect arms from UV rays. This unique polo also contains ZnO SUNTET® fabric which embeds millions of tiny particles of zinc oxide (the same ingredient that is used in better sunscreens) into every fiber.

Recently, we came across the perfect opportunity to obtain some solid feedback on our new Convertible Polo.  Dr. Manju George, a board certified pediatric dermatologist who provides personalized care for children and young adults at her private office in Florida, was excited to be one of the first to try this new sun protection polo and give us her input.

ZnO SUNTECT Yourself

“Our ZnO SUNTECT® fabric is a groundbreaking milestone in skin protection!” said Coolibar President and Founder John Barrow, when the fabric was first introduced.

It’s been over a year since we debuted our innovative Zno SUNTECT® fabric – now one of our best selling SUNTECT materials.  We embedded millions of tiny particles of zinc oxide (ZnO), a natural mineral compound with established sun protection properties, into the fibers of natural cotton and viscose from bamboo to create a supremely soft, cool and comfortable jersey knit fabric.

Due to its overwhelmingly positive response, our merchandising team has used it to create several new garments, including our men’s and women’s tropical weight polos, women’s sun wrap and children’s long sleeve t-shirt.  And now, we’re turning to you, our valued customers, to ask what you think about this fabric.

Coolibar Women's Ruche Top

Have you worn a ZnO SUNTECT garment?  What are your thoughts?

What’s missing from your wardrobe that should be made of  ZnO SUNTECT?

We appreciate your feedback and will continue to design new Sun Protective Products with you in mind.
