Travel Adventures in Coolibar

Like most companies, Coolibar employees are busy. They devote the majority of their waking hours to Coolibar yet still make time to travel, explore and do the things they love. A true testament to our brand is when an employee takes Coolibar along on their adventure and returns with an even greater enthusiasm for our products and mission. Such is the case with Seth.

Meet Coolibar employee Seth Epstein. Seth has been with us for roughly 8 years in various rolls and currently reports to the Interactive Marketing Department. He recently had the opportunity to not only visit the Philippines but be guided by a resident, a friend serving in the Peace Corps. He took Coolibar with him and shares his thoughts on its usefulness.

My travel buddy (who also happens to be Coolibar’s IT Director) and I packed our favorite Coolibar apparel and even gathered some items to share with my 2 friends living in the Philippines. Despite knowing I work for Coolibar, Gina insisted on reminding me about the importance of sun protection. They had been using massive amount of sunscreen to prevent burning from the intense sun in MogPog.

Considering our Midwestern roots, and my Viking ancestry, the high temperatures and oppressive humidity was almost unbearable. My friends weren’t sure what to expect when I told them I was bringing sun protective clothing. Joe, who had worn cotton shirts with cut off sleeves for 6 months straight to beat the heat, ditched them for a long sleeve UPF 50+ swim shirt. Not having to go through his daily sunscreen ritual to cover his arms was also appreciated. I gave up trying to wear any of my cotton shirts after a couple of days (they were wet and heavy) and lived in my Coolibar the rest of the trip.

Every time I travel with Coolibar, I discover more about the versatility of our fabrics. I spent more time in my aquaSUNTECT clothing out of the water than in. Wearing something quick drying, lightweight, and breathable allowed me to truly enjoy this amazing country, with less distraction from the island heat. I want people to know how amazingly lightweight this stuff is, you can’t go wrong traveling with Coolibar.

-Seth

Follow up note: Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost loved ones and are recovering in typhoon-devastated central Philippines. Our friends, who are located north of the damage, survived the typhoon and are currently helping with relief efforts.

Meet Coolibar Customer: Carol

Last summer we invited customers to share a photo of themselves and tell us why they would make a great Coolibar model. You voted (lots of you, thanks!) and our creative team chose the winner. Meet Carol, perhaps our most passionate customer, who submitted not one, but five pictures. It was easy says Carol, because she lives in her Coolibar. Even at the office–paired with a set of fresh water pearls.

“As head of the chamber of commerce, I walk around the downtown area visiting businesses. Throwing on some fresh water pearls with a lovely Coolibar blouse goes from office, (roll down sleeves) to the sunny downtown sidewalks. When you need to be careful of sun exposure, this is an easy, stylish option,” said Carol. Carol was ecstatic to be picked as our winner.  She answered a few questions for us about her experience, her photo shoot and debut as a model.

Why did you apply for the Coolibar model contest? I’ve been very health conscious most of my life, I’m a registered dietitian, and write nutrition and wellness articles.  I advocate healthy eating with lots of fresh foods, and being physically active.  After melanoma surgery and reconstruction, it took a while to get back to my tennis, golf, kayaking etc….and once I was strong and flexible enough to enjoy them again, I found I spent too much time re-applying sun screen and not enough time having fun.  I was always concerned that even though the SPF lotion said “waterproof”….how much water or perspiration would affect the integrity of the protection.  The Coolibar clothing allows me to be outside with family and friends and enjoy water and sweat-inducing land fun.

What was your favorite part of the entire experience? It was fun including my husband in my kayaking photos and my Standard Poodle, Sophie in some of the shots.

How did it feel to be a model for a day? I had a basic idea of what would be happening as my neighbor friend & I organized a “Neighbor Hood Progressive Party” that was filmed for TV.  I knew shots would be repeated in order to get the best light/expression/position/ etc.

Was there any personal goal you had during this process? I am hoping that as I am more pro-active with sharing my enthusiasm for the Coolibar product, more people will take a bit of effort to protect their skin from sun damage.

Is there anything else you wish to share? I presently write a blog called  NutritionFreshOnline, which I want to expand to include fitness and skin health.  I have personal experience with both (I’ve set 2 state swim records in AZ) so I have a wealth of personal anecdotes and insights that could be helpful and appreciated by many.

Look for more from Carol next season!

Coolibar put to the test in the Mideast

Phillip Jones is a well-seasoned traveler of the Mideast. After spending 30 years in deserts and a bout of skin cancer, he still loves hot, dry places, but now takes the necessary skin precautions.

I lived in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, traveled in Bahrain, Jordan and Turkey. I love the Mideast, people, culture and food. On March 27, I travel to Salalah, Oman for my third visit. Oman tests clothing and travelers with intense heat, sun, strong winds and the reflected sun from the ocean when on the coast. After years in the Tropics and the deserts of Arabia, Jordan, Oman, and Kuwait, my skin must be protected from more skin cancer. Since I travel light, my clothing must be strong, easily hand washed and dried at night, then look sharp the next day.

After 62 years of sun exposure in the Tropics and in four deserts, my skin is in bad shape. My dermatologist has said that I have no good skin left on my hands. The only solution for me has been to wear Coolibar Full Ginger Gloves when I drive, fish or plan to be outside for any length of time. Since my ears have been burned many times by liquid nitrogen, as well as being “trimmed” at Duke Hospital, I often wear the Coolibar protective sun drape in the Middle East and when fishing in the Arabian Gulf or the Indian Ocean. With the sun drape on, I can fish for twelve hours on the ocean and get back to land without any sunburn. This Easter, I spent a week in Oman for the third time, fishing off the coast of Salalah, then returning to Sur for five more days of fishing on the water. This trip, I wore my Coolibar Full Finger Gloves, Protective Sun Drape, Featherweight Bucket Hat and Adventure Jacket. My skin did not even turn pink!

The Coolibar bucket hat works very well in the windy desert or on the water. The 3-inch brim is not too large to flap from the wind and can be tightened with a cord in back as well as the chin strap. It folds nicely for pocket carry as well. When I did not wear the sun drape, I would put the hood of the Adventure Jacket under the Bucket Hat, preventing any neck sunburn. The Adventure jacket works well on many levels. It is thin, cool to wear and has six pockets. When my fishing line would become tangled, I would take my gloves off, stuff them in the outside jacket pockets, and retrieve them when lines were unkinked. I kept my eyeglasses secure in the chest pockets, fastened with Velcro.

I am fair skinned, blue-eyed and a redhead, so I cannot take any more chances with the sun. My wife wants me to wear sunscreen, but with Coolibar products I only have to cover my nose and a bit of cheeks with sunscreen, and still avoid burns. Coolibar products pack well, wash in a bathroom sink when traveling, dry quickly and still look sharp the next day!

I’m African-American and Sun Safe

Coolibar was introduced to mom blogger Quiana Agbai of Harlem Love Birds this spring at Getting Gorgeous, an event dedicated to making mom’s feel gorgeous, both inside and out. Quiana learned all about Coolibar Sun Protection You Wear and needless to say, we had a lengthy conversation about the importance of sun protection for all skin types. Mrs. Harlem Love Bird shares her thoughts with us.

Review by Quiana Agbai, Blogger, Harlem Love Birds

As an African-American one of the biggest myths is that we don’t need to wear sunscreen because of the melanin in our skin. This is far from the truth, especially in light of the recent study about prolonged use of sunscreen preventing skin aging. Although the subjects weren’t African-American, it was speculated that outstanding results would have been achieved as well.

While I’ve used sunscreen off-and-on throughout my childhood and now as an adult every single day, especially with my diagnosis of discoid lupus in 2007, it’s been important more than ever to practice being sun safe.

With that in mind when I was introduced to Coolibar at Getting Gorgeous blogger event last month, I knew it was a brand I wanted to learn more about. Sure enough, Coolibar partners with the Lupus Foundation of America to provide education about the importance of maintaining sun safe habits.

The Coolibar Sun Beach Hat I’m wearing (picture left) was included in my Getting Gorgeous gift bag. It’s been a mainstay when I’m out and about especially for prolonged play-dates at the park and pool. Every time I wear it I get stopped by people wanting to know where it’s from.

I’ve noticed my Sun Beach Hat really does keep me cool and because my scalp is most affected by discoid lupus it provides outstanding coverage. It also has an adjustable loop inside to adjust the fit; since the brim is so large I’ve had a few times when it blows away like a sail so making sure the fit is correct is important! It also folds up nicely but retains its shape and structure when unfolded – no floppy hat syndrome.

Guest blogger Quiana Agbai received free sun protective product for the purpose of this review. All opinions are her own.

A letter from a new Coolibar customer

April 26, 2013

Dear Coolibar,

I’ve never felt like writing a fan letter to a company before, but I do now.

Recently, when preparing for a Maui vacation, I entered panic city—I hadn’t been to Hawaii in 20 years and the thought of wearing a bathing suit suddenly horrified me! Local stores offered only boxy board shorts and blah rash guards as alternatives to the ubiquitous skimpy suits. I’d never shopped online for clothes before, but I was desperate!

Quickly, I discovered that only two sites, HyrdoChic and Coolibar, might fit my needs. I came across criticism about Coolibar in a few places, so I tried HydroChic first. I chose five items, though apprehensive about the ones on sale being nonreturnable. The $19 shipping fee was a shock, especially so when the items arrived, 5 days after ordering, stuffed in an envelope that barely survived intact. Unfortunately, none of the pants fit correctly (mainly because of the lack of drawstrings) but I didn’t return them immediately because at that point I had no alternatives. When I was ready to return them I realized they give you only 14 days from the date they were shipped to return them for a refund—my 11 days had long passed!

I decided to give Coolibar a try—and I’m so glad I did! I found none of the criticism I’d read to be true, save one—the fact that you don’t offer swim bras! Otherwise, I found Coolibar to be superior in every way! My 9 items were packed with care and shipped for free (they arrived 8 days after ordering; for my following order of 6 items, I opted to pay the $12.95 for 2nd day air.) All items were of the highest quality, the pants thankfully had drawstrings and the shirts had internal gripper strips as an extra feature. Also, I was amazed to find how the outfits totally withstood the abuse I subjected them to, with all the snorkeling I did and the many times I got smashed around into the powerful shore breaks and ground into the sand (I saw people in regular bathing suits practically stripped naked.)

My favorite outfit was the Ruche Swim Shirt worn with the Swim Tights (which I found versatile because with the legs pulled up they could be worn as capris.) Also, I was thrilled to find I could go swimming and then go straight to any store or restaurant (if still a bit damp it didn’t show, buy they dried fast!) It helped make my trip more carefree and easy.

Of course, your clothing’s most important feature is sun protection (having had melanoma I learned the importance of that the hard way.) It was great to only have to apply sunscreen to my face, neck, hands and feet, and never get burned. My travel companions went through bottles of sunscreen, and still got sunburned. Also, I learned on my trip that sunscreen is a source of pollution, that there are even days when the water in places like Molokini Crater are covered with oil slicks from their use!

Since I bought multiple sizes (being unsure how they’d fit) I’m very thankful that you have a customer-friendly, REALISTIC, return policy! And, it was great being able to wait until after my trip, when I was certain of what I wanted to keep, to return my unused items!

Thanks for everything, I’ll be ordering again!

Sincerely,

Deborah

Traveling to Paradise in Coolibar

After a lifetime of holidays abroad, Suzanne Morphet combined her passion for travel with her profession as a news reporter and became a travel writer. Suzanne shares her latest venture to Marquesas Islands – which she calls a tropical paradise – as well as the Coolibar gear she took along.

“Before my recent cruise through the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific I looked for clothing that would protect me from the harsh equatorial sun. But I also wanted clothes that would be comfortable in the heat and stylish.  I was pleased to discover Coolibar, which uses innovative new fabrics and technology to make clothes that are breathable and a pleasure to wear.

For ease of travel, I pack lightly. I took just one small suitcase for my two-week cruise, with only clothes that I could wash and hang-dry overnight. Coolibar clothes fit the bill perfectly. These are some of my favorites:

Sport Shirt: I wore this shirt many of the days we went ashore. It’s light as a feather, with a hidden front pocket for a passport or money. I loved the vibrant color (Lagoon) and got lots of compliments on it.

ZnO Sun Wrap: This is what I mean by innovative technology.  The ZnO line is made with bamboo cotton embedded with micro-particles of zinc oxide. Sounds like sunscreen for your skin, but there’s no messy application. It’s safe to say I wore my ZnO Sun Wrap every day. It kept me comfortable in air-conditioned restaurants or out on deck late at night while stargazing.

ZnO Beach Pants: They might be considered beach pants, but I got away wearing them into town, to market, sightseeing, you-name-it. Indispensable, they are the perfect accompaniment to the Sport Shirt or other sun-protective shirt. Mine are white and I worried if they would stand up to frequent hand-washing but they did and still look like new.

Sun Shawl: Sometimes I just wanted to wear my skimpiest bathing suit and lie in the sun. That’s when my sun shawl came in handy. It’s long enough to cover me from head to toe. And it’s so lightweight I wouldn’t heat up underneath it. Perfect for lying poolside and reading.

ZnO Maxi Dress: You can dress it up or down. Nicely fitted, but not clingy. Does double duty as a sundress and a dinner dress.  I never thought a little black dress could be so versatile!”

Coolibar Customer Cory H.

We recently received some great feedback from a new Coolibar customer after his trip to Taiwan. Cory expressed what we try to convey, he just does it much better. Cory’s note is below.

“I wanted to let you know that I recently purchased an XXL Blue Sky Sun Shirt on the recommendation of Tim Ferriss.  I got it right before a trip to Taiwan.  It was perfect.

I wore it during the hot, humid day to keep cool and protected from the sun.

I wore it to a semi-formal meeting where it fit in just fine.

I wore it on a boat between scuba dives.

I wore it on a scooter around the island of Lanyu after I got a little too much sun one day.

I wore it on the plane ride home because I was so comfy.

I never write letters about products, but I was compelled after the experience I had with this shirt.  Thanks for making a great product.”

Dermatologists Agree We Need to Prevent Skin Cancer in Style

Dermatologists agree that style is just as important as long lasting UPF 50 coverage when it comes to choosing sun protective clothing. This was a frequent comment at this year’s American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. Dermatologists often recommend sun protective clothing to patients with sun sensitive conditions, such as skin cancer, but claim patients more often comply when sun protective clothing looks like normal clothing that’s “in-style”. After hearing numerous comments from dermatologists at the AAD Annual Meeting last weekend, Coolibar sun protective clothing has great news for those looking for “stylish” sun protective clothing.

Sun protective clothing has evolved over the last decade. What was once seen as a medical device for those with sun sensitive conditions is now common practice for families and individuals looking to stay healthy and covered under the sun versus using sunscreen alone. Coolibar has spent 10 years producing moisture wicking, breathable, natural feeling fabrics along with stylish fashions for people to wear during outdoor activities.

Coolibar clothing designer Alicia Pizzo has over eight years of experience designing women’s clothing. Since coming to Coolibar in 2011, Pizzo has worked to create more flattering styles that still provide the skin coverage people want. Pizzo says, “During the AAD Annual Meeting, we wanted to get as much feedback as possible from dermatologists on our new UPF 50+ styles.” New styles showcased, available on www.coolibar.com starting tomorrow, included nautical print dresses, skirts, and tops for women and girls. “All feedback was extremely positive,” says Pizzo.  Dr. Michelle Tarbox, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Saint Louis University, liked the new styles so much that she purchased a new UPF 50+ Polo Dress on the spot.  “I love this polo dress, it has a flattering feminine fit  and modern styling with a young hip look to it, but still provides full sun protective coverage of the upper body and the legs down to the knees. You would never guess looking at the garment that it is designed for sun protection. After the Meeting, I wore the dress all day and was impressed with how comfortable and cool it was and also by how many compliments I got on it!”

Julie, Heather, Alicia AAD12
Coolibar employees Julie Ziminske, Heather Olson, and Alicia Pizzo at the AAD Meeting.

Other dermatologist who stopped at the Coolibar booth continued to express their excitement toward the new sun protective styles. Some women even debated how to accessorize the new looks. Ideas included wearing the navy stripe pattern with red wedges, red jewelry accents and a simple white sun hat.

Collage of New Coolibar ZnO Stripe Prints

Paralleling dermatologists’ interest in stylish sun protective clothing at this year’s AAD Meeting, skin cancer prevention was a hot topic. SPOT Skin Cancer™, a new initiative designed to raise skin cancer awareness to a new level while positively positioning dermatologists as uniquely trained doctors treating life-threatening diseases, was introduced during the Meeting. The campaign is using an attractive bright orange on all campaign material versus the color black that’s currently associated with skin cancer and “spot” patterns that represent moles.  The Academy says, “With SPOT, the Academy is bringing all of its skin cancer public education efforts under one consistent brand identity for maximum impact.” SPOT will be launched to the public on Melanoma Monday, May 7, 2012.

For Women with a Sense of Adventure – Travel Sun Shirt Review

Soft Adventure Travel, the fastest growing segment of the exploding travel industry, is rewarding for the spirit and intellect, yet is safe and without excessive physical demands. Linda Ballou, author and soft adventure travel writer, has hiked, biked, kayaked and horse-backed through untouched country. Most trips are with a reliable guide, but often she explores alone seeking the sustenance from nature that can only be found in solitude.  With a degree in English Literature and a published author for over twenty years, Linda’s well-researched articles have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Northwest Travel, Specialty Travel Index and she’s the LA Outdoor Travel Examiner .

Linda knows a thing or two about the importance of carefully preparing for every excursion, including sun protection. “Since I am a ‘booming boomer’ in the most likely demographic to develop skin cancers, I really must pay attention to sun-protection,” says Linda. “It’s so important that I plan to write an article on the subject in my column on the National Association of Baby Boomer Women site in January. I hope to spotlight the Coolibar Women’s Travel Sun Shirt, which contains a built in sun scarf for additional coverage on tender chest skin, and the need for sunscreen with zinc oxide as well as a wide-brimmed hat along with other skin saving tips.”

Linda also shares her thoughts about her favorite Coolibar Travel Sun Shirt and sun protection accessories she uses. Strolling the sands of Malibu, hiking the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, river rafting and horseback riding, I need strong sun protection. I am thrilled to have this ‘Sunsational’ Coolibar Travel Sun Shirt in my wardrobe. It is light as a summer’s breeze and is sophisticated enough for street wear, but sturdy enough for outdoor activities. I live in Southern California and spend a good deal of time at the beach or hiking on the trails. This shirt is perfect for my sunny clime,” says Linda.

Linda Ballou, Expert Travel Writer

We asked for Linda’s opinion on our aire SUNTECT® fabric, which her shirt is constructed with. “My favorite feature of the fabric is the light airy feel. Plus it needs no ironing after washing. I’m glad a fabric that makes me feel so feminine can stand up to the rigors of an active outdoor life. I would give the fabric a 10 (on a scale of 10 being great to 0 being horrible) for hot weather hiking. For cool weather, I might opt for my flannel shirt, but that does not have sun protection. The fabric also didn’t stick to my skin like polyester tends to.”

“Other sun protection accessories I use include a hat and sometimes fingerless gloves. I love my Sedona Hat. It is sturdy and wide-brimmed and really does keep the burning rays off my face. The chin strap keeps in on in the strongest winds. The fingerless gloves are just the ticket for river rafting when hands take a beating from wind, sun and water. You do not lose mobility while gaining much needed protection against the elements,” says Linda.

Fun Sun Wear for Family Beach Day

“I was looking forward to wearing my [Coolibar Beach] shirt as it felt so light and weightless when I pulled it out of the package.  Our Florida climate presented a perfect day to wear it to the beach.  The first thing I noted was how incredibly light this shirt really was, as I couldn’t even feel it on my body.  The cooler air from the ocean could easily flow through it, keeping me cool; which is very important in Florida where we have 90oF+ days during the summer.  It was a very comfortable shirt and quite trendy, sporting a nice size hoodie, that made me feel like a celebrity. (see picture)  My husband was having a lot of fun too running around taking pictures of the two of us working the “beach runway” and enjoying our new Coolibar gear.  And why not, we looked awesome, and felt very comfortable while being well protected from the sun.  A couple of people actually approached us to ask where we got our cool clothes.  Bingo, Coolibar!

“March in Florida offers the perfect weather to get out, but the water was still cool for swimming yet.  So we played a lot in the sand, making sand castles and just being silly running around chasing each other.  As no family “photo-shoot” ever goes without bloopers, the battery in our camera died just before we decided to test out the water, and wet our toes properly.  Of course we’ve got soaked.  That was something worth seeing.  I am happy to report that my shirt stayed looking good wet, as well as dry and actually dried up in no time without clinging to my body.  I loved the fact that our clothes, being wet, haven’t attracted too much sand either, which usually is a nuisance to clean up.  Our son had particularly lots of fun throwing the sand on me as you can see, but we had no problems there.   Just lots of fun and memorable moments.  He looked so cute in his outfit [Toddler Water Polo Swim Set].  He is not much of a hat wearer and put up a bit of a fight in the beginning, but 5 minutes later he got used to it, and enjoyed the whole outfit just as much as I’ve enjoyed watching him wearing it.  Or perhaps he also wanted to show off what a good model he is, just in case Coolibar is hiring new models. 🙂

“Overall, we are very happy with our outfits and will wear them often, especially living in Sunny Florida.”

-Natalja
