The Importance of SKIN CHECKS (Video)

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

As a dermatologist, I wanted to outline why it is important to get SKIN CHECKS. The advice varies per individual. It really depends on what kind of skin you have. If you are exceptionally fair vs. exceptionally dark there aren’t straight across the board recommendations for what you need. However, at least once in your life, preferably not too far past your 20’s get a good Full Body Skin Check so at least we can map out areas that are potentially warranting a little closer observation versus things we know will never be trouble.

For people who’ve had skin cancer we say once a year for sure, timed with your general physical. For people who’ve never had a skin cancer, maybe once every couple of years or as something crops up. If you have something that is not healing or bleeding or changing color or growing or something that generally gets your attention even if it just itches. Bring that to our attention or at least bring it to the attention of your primary care doctor so that they can help determine if you need a dermatologist to see that (spot). Skin cancer can look so different in different people and even the same skin cancer looks different and it takes a dermatologist sometimes to really be able to tell you if that lesion is of concern or not.

The guidelines are the ABCD’s of Melanoma. We’ve all heard of those. So if something is asymmetric, or the boarder is irregular, or the color is of concern to you, an espresso brown, or the diameter is simply growing. And certainly if it were bleeding or itching or otherwise bothering you come and have us give it a check.

If those things are not happening schedule that baseline exam so we can take one good look over and then we can plan our skin care from there.

Be skin safe, be SunAWARE!

Natural Skin Tones are Totally on Trend

Editorial

Each year we observe President’s Day on the third Monday in February. For some reason, this particular President’s Day got me thinking about the days of old (or the days when George Washington was President) when pale skin was in. In fact, women before the 1920s used to use skin whitening methods to keep as much of a milky white tone as possible. This symbolized a high social status as outdoor workers, who were considered lower class, carried a tan appearance.  So why did this change over the years, and where are we now?

It’s argued that Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (pictured above), a revolutionary French fashion designer of the 20th century, started the tanning trend by mistake. While visiting the French Riviera in the 1920s, she accidentally got sunburn. In doing so, bronzed skin became a symbol of glamour rather than peasantry as her large following instantly adopted this look. By the end of the decade, the poor had left the fields for factories, and, helped along by Chanel, the trend for tan skin began.

Between Chanel, the industrial revolution, women’s magazine advertisements encouraging tanning in the 1940’s, the premiere of the bikini in 1946, the introduction of tanning beds in the late 70’s early 80’s, tan skin became, what seemed, acceptable, fashionable and easily obtainable. Years later, we know better.

This trend of the past century has left us with skyrocketing skin cancer rates and many with prematurely aging skin.  Currently, more people seem to be wising-up, protecting their skin, and “going with their own glow”.

For the past few years now, we’ve been seeing more natural toned celebrities on the red carpet, and pale, yet glowing, models on the runway. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, teen idols from the popular Twilight movies, have set a new trend for the younger crowd. Both sport a pale complexion yet glow with natural beauty.  Jane Larkworthy, recent Beauty Director of W magazine even claims tanning is just not in fashion anymore. “I can’t remember the last time I saw a tanned model in my magazine or on the runway.”

If you were once a part of the tan fad that is now out, you may not be able to reverse the damage that has been done. But the good news is that you can take action now. Start protecting your skin from the sun and get back your natural glow.

So how do you keep that natural skin tone glowing?

First, avoid unprotected UV exposure as much as possible. Second, wear sun protective clothing, including a hat with a three-inch brim or greater, along with UV sunglasses. Then apply a generous amount of sunscreen, with SPF 30 or higher, 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Try a broad-spectrum sunscreen such as Soleo Organics, SolBar, or Vanicream. Do this, and your skin will be naturally glowing in no time!

School Sun Hat Program (Video)

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis
Uptown Dermatology
Minneapolis, MN

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I want to talk to you today about an issue that is near and dear to my heart, and that is Coolibar’s School Sun Hat Program.  My daughter’s pre-school qualified for this program and they were outfitted with a bunch of adorable little pre-school sized hats so that when they go outside to play at recess they have their sun protection covered.  A lot of schools consider sunscreen creams as medication and they don’t necessarily have the freedom to apply sunscreen to your child.  So, having a school that provides hats to your child will ensure their sun protection when they’re outside.

There are some super cute options.

Child Reversible Bucket Hat

This little reversible lightweight sun hat, that is also adjustable, keeps them cool, keeps them protected.  I’d still have them wear their sun protective clothing for their little arms but this will provide adequate protection for their ears and face and actually does help keep them cool when they are running around at recess.

Child Chin Strap Hat

Another example in a little bit of a different fabric is also adjustable.  This one has a nice little chin strap too, so maybe if you’re out on the boat with the kids for example.  It also has a nice little absorbent headband.

So teaching kids to be SunAWARE at a young age is the point of this School Sun Hat Program that Coolibar puts on.  I highly recommend it, make sure your child’s school applies for the program.

Help teach your kid to be SunAWARE at a young age, the value lasts a lifetime!

The Villages Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team

The Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team

Ah, Retirement – time to sit back, relax, and reflect on life. Not anymore and certainly not for the Leathernecks Dragon Boat Racing Team of The Villages, a retirement community in Florida! This racing team is a National Champion – taking home the “Gold Medal” in the 200 meter race and a “Silver Medal” in the 500 and 2,000 meter races in the 2010 USDBF Club Crew National Championships.

The 24 member Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team is comprised of former and retired U.S. Marines and their wives or significant others, whose average age is 66. The slang term “Leatherneck” is used to describe United States Marine Corps members and originated from the leather collar formerly part of the uniform, worn for protection of the neck during sword combat. A fitting name for our retirees!

Watch Team Leatherneck footage from the 2010 USDBF National Championships.

Though these Leathernecks are no longer protecting their necks from swords, they are protecting themselves from UV. Many of the team’s members are battling skin cancer in one form or another and spend countless hours training and racing in the sun. The Coolibar Short Sleeve Swim Shirt provides UPF 50+ protection for Team Leatherneck, to which their dermatologists are celebrating. You can’t keep these guys off the water!

The Villages Leathernecks practice two days a week on Lake Dora and spend another two days lifting weights and physically training. Their fierce competitive spirit has earned them the respect and admiration of the many much younger teams in the Florida Dragon Boat Circuit. The Leathernecks serve as a reminder that life doesn’t end at retirement, in fact for many, it’s just begun.

The 2011 World Championships will be held in Tampa, Florida this August. Here’s to another Gold Medal for The Villages Leathernecks Dragon Boat Team!

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I wanted to talk to you today specifically about sun protective clothing and why we need it.  While we love our sunscreen and advise putting sunscreen on the face, V of the neck, back of the hands, the best sun protection actually comes from sun protective clothing

The fact is, it’s hard to use enough sunscreen and remember to re-apply it.  But if you put on a nice piece of sun protective clothing, you have the relief of not having to remember to do those things – especially for the kids who are going to be out and about and playing.  Simply putting a t-shirt on them and letting them run around in the water is not enough sun protection.  That t-shirt loses its sun protective factor the minute it gets wet. It goes down from maybe a 5-7 to about a 2 and that’s not enough sun protection for a kid.

I’m going to show you some interesting alternatives.

Coolibar makes a fantastic material that is UPF 50, nice light woven material, tightly woven so the sun does not get through it.  It’s like  a fine silk really and it’s a synthetic fabric that washes up beautifully, I know, but it feels super lightweight and is  very breathable and is constructed so that there is airflow through the back.  So, you don’t overheat in these, even though you’re wearing long sleeves there is beautiful ventilation.  And actually, keeping the Ultra violet light off your skin keeps you cooler.  Ironically wearing a sun protective shirt will keep you cooler.

Some nice clothing for kids this fabric has Zinc Oxide, a physical sunscreen that we reviewed in another segment, embedded in here.  This keeps you nice and sun protected and even if it gets wet it does not lose its sun protective factor.  And some super cute stuff for kids, this long sleeve, you just don’t have to worry about getting the kids sunburned.  Keep the hat on everybody, a nice pair of sunglasses and you’ve got it covered.

Vitamin D and Sunshine (Video)

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis
Uptown Dermatology
Minneapolis, MN

Hi, this is Dr. Davis for Coolibar Sun Protective Clothing.

I just wanted to touch on the topic of Vitamin D and Sunshine.  And while we all agree that we need adequate amounts of Vitamin D the American Academy of Dermatology holds the position that Ultraviolet light is not the safest way to get your Vitamin D

It’s preferred to do that through dietary intake – fish such as salmon or even tuna, even vitamin D supplementation in a vitamin pill is a lot safer for you than getting it through your skin.   In the old days when it was recommended that we get a little natural sunlight, the thing is there weren’t as good of variety of dietary sources and now there are.

So, vitamin D is something you can get adequately through your diet, still use your sunscreen and remain sun safe and SunAWARE!

Albinism Crisis in Tanzania (Video)

Recently Coolibar was contacted by ABC’s 20/20 about a story on the persecution of those with albinism in Tanzania.  Through this connection Coolibar partnered with a non-profit organization called Under the Same Sun, which provides resources to assist those disadvantaged by disability, discrimination and poverty allowing an increased quality of life.  Coolibar donated sun protective clothing and hats to two schools in Tanzania, a safe refuge for children with albinism.  Tune in to 20/20 on Friday, August 27th to watch the full story.

“Coolibar’s goal is to be the pre-eminent authority on sun protection worldwide.  There is a problem with the people suffering with Albinism in Tanzania.  Albinism is really just a lack of melanin in your skin; it’s the stuff that gives you the natural protection against the sun.  The rate of albinism in Tanzania is significantly higher.  Typically it affects about one person in 20,000 and in Tanzania it’s about one in 4,000.”

“Specifically what Coolibar is doing to help is we’re donating hats and we’re donating clothing; tops, shirts, blouses and so on.  It’s actually getting bundled up here in Minnesota and is going to be shipped over to them.”

“The main focus of our donation is for students and teachers in a couple of schools.  All together it will be about 500 people that we’ll be outfitting with our products and protecting.  We operate in a space where there is a lot of opportunities for us to work with communities and organizations who are not for profits or are serving people who are in need.  This is one of the first times that we’ve helped people in other countries, so we’re very happy to be doing that.  Coolibar’s mission is to help people enjoy the outdoors and their activities in the outdoors, and this type of work fits in very closely with that.”

Provides resources to assist those disadvantaged by disability.

Is there a Safe Tan? (Video)

Dermatologist Dr. Jaime Davis
Uptown Dermatology
Minneapolis, MN

Today we’re going to talk about safe tanning, and the first thing to know is that There is No Safe Tanning!  Tanning is your skin’s mechanism for protecting itself from unsafe ultraviolet light.  Now, this varies depending on what you were genetically gifted with in terms of skin tone.  So, darker skin tones are going to be able to tolerate a little more light.  Really pale skin doesn’t have that melanin safety net to put up, so the lighter your skin the more you have to head this advice.

No Tanning Beds – that’s the bottom line, there is no safe tanning bed, there is no measured dose.  It’s kind of analogous to saying, how many times can I not wear my seatbelt before it’s dangerous?   How many times can I go tanning before its dangerous?  It depends on a lot of things and I would say there is no safe amount to not wear your seat belt or to go tanning.

A couple of other things I wanted to address also is this Myth of Getting a Base Tan before Vacation.  The recommendation is really just Bring your Sunscreen on Vacation and Use It.  You really want to prevent sunburns and you know, frankly, you are going to get a nice little color through your sunscreen, even if it is a spf 30.  Embrace the healthy look of your natural skin color.  You do not need to enhance it with a tan…and if you want to, there are plenty of great options for self tanners.  We have spray booths, you can go in and get a tan sprayed on you and it’s all proven safe over time.  I would much rather see people use tanning creams or tanning spray booths than tanning beds in terms of safety.  I hear the concern a lot, but are those creams safe?  Way safer than natural ultraviolet light, that’s for sure.  The other advantage to avoiding ultraviolet light for tanning is your skin will thank you in many ways, besides reducing your risk for skin cancer your skin looks younger longer because healthy skin is better looking skin – no doubt about it!

Keep in mind – Be SunAWARE and Be Safe!
